Hi everyone!!! I'm a recent switcher to Apple. I love the ibook dearly. I've only had one problem so far and want to see if anyone has any new suggestions. The funny thing is the problem is with a windows application. I can't watch video through the windows media player I downloaded. It worked just fine for about a week and now it tries to open up and the icon just bounces up and down on my taskbar and nothing happens. I ran techtool (i believe thats what its called) and it said my video card failed whatever test it runs on it but the thing is, quicktime still runs just fine. I've tried deleting windows media player and downloading it again twice and to no avail. I only use it because there are lots of sites out there that don't give me the option to use quicktime. Any other suggestions?? Thanks for any help you can offer and sorry for the long post. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Welcome to the wonderful world of Apple computing. Your first post wasn't too long at all.
With your unit presumably still under warranty, I'd be concerned that I had a defective video card and want that problem checked out and fixed. To me that transcends any bickering about Microsoft. WMP for OS X should work in your iBook. It isn't a Windows application. Could be that it's just corrupted and you need to repair permissions or use Find to locate and delete all of its files before reinstalling it. BUT if TechTools is telling you that your video card is faulty, that requires immediate attention IMO. Why tolerate a system that's not right?

If there is no decreased performance in gameplay or other Mac graphical applications I would not think it is your graphics card. Since you are new you may not be familiar with deleting the preferences file of the uninstalled application before you re-install it, or are you?
Check users/ your home folder/Library/Preferences for the Windows Media Preferences file and delete it before re-installing WMP.
You may want to check your video card using the hardware test found on your install CD that hopefully came with your laptop before calling Apple, who's technicians will probably tell you pretty much the same thing; to use the hardware test.
You can also run XBENCH and compare your graphics card results with other users that have your laptop.

I just want to say thanks guys for helping me out with my problem. I took your suggestions and all is well again. I never would've know to delete all aspects of the media player before downloading it again.
I also appreciate the quick responses (even though it took me a little while to come back and check for them). I'm definitely going to enjoy being a part of the mac community.
