Internet Connect & connect speed

I'm just curious about this .........On my desktop computer, Internet Connect will NOT indicate the speed of my connection. I use the modem in my Airport to connect and I like to monitor the connection speed as it is sometimes unacceptably slow. At the same time, my iBook is sitting there, also using the Airport to connect to the internet, and it ALWAYS shows the connection speed. Both computers are running 10.3.7 and the version of IC is the same 1.3.
This isn't a big deal, just an irritation as I'm always having to wake the iBook to see my connection speed. Anyone know why this little bit of weirdness is happening or how I can get the desktop computer to show my connection speed?

Is the desktop connected through ethernet?

No, it is connected via an Airport Card to the network. Any ideas?
