I have a G4 (Sawtooth) 450MHz with a 256MB and a 128MB memory chip.
First: is maximum memory 1GB on this machine?
Second: Assuming it is 1 GB, does it make a difference if I pull the 128MB and add three 256MB chips or one 256MB and one 512MB? Obviously a 512 is cheaper than two 256s.
Thanks!

Max memory on sawtooth is 2 GB....4 slots X 512mb each, so you could leave your existing chips in place, add 2 more 512's and end up with 1.4GB, or max it out with 4- 512's /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
or whatever combination you want......... OS X LOVES ram

WOW! 2GB-that's great. I may just get 2-512s initially and see how that goes. Thanks.

For general interest--while getting ready to order the additional memory from OWC, I found where they indicate the specs for the G4/Sawtooth. Max memory is only 1.5GB, not 2GB. In my case, adding 2-512MB chips would give me 1.4GB, which is sufficient and I won't waste my existing chips (256MB and 128MB).

Hi
The max memory is indeed 2GB (4 x 512MB). Mac OS 9.x and earlier will not allow you to use over 1.5GB. When more than 1.5GB is installed, the System will falsely report using the additional. So, if you install 2GB, the System (Finder) will report it is using 512MB+. Which is, of course, false.
Mac OS X will allow full use of all 2GB.

Okay, I should have qualified my response. Although I'm upgrading to OS X (Panther) it may be a month or more before I get there; and I will still be using OS 9.2.2, from a partition on my external Firewire LaCie, as a fall back for any programs which may not work even in OS X Classic mode.
