after watching the keynote i can't help but notice that many of dashboards widgets seem to be new versions of some of the features of sherlock. which leaves me wondering, is dashboard going to replace sherlock? or is sherlock going to add new, more powerful features and just lite versions of some of the features being part of dashboard? anyone have any info on this or thoughts? just curious...

I've been under the impression for some time now that Sherlock is already dead. Well, still moving, but awfully sick. I haven't used it since Safari and its neat direct link to Google and tabs to other places.

i completely agree. was sherlock even updated with Panther? i expect it to be absent with tiger. dashboard has duplicated its functionality.

i personally like sherlock and find it very useful, although i won't miss it as long as dashboard includes all the features of sherlock i use. the one that i use the most, next to phonebook, is movies and the way it lets you search by movies or theaters, locations, dates, etc. and automatically loads the trailer, etc. etc..
sadly enough that's one widget that hasn't been mentioned yet so if dashboard finally kills sherlock i really hope that gets added.

This is an interesting question. It's been pretty well-reported that Konfabulator took up a lot of memory overhead. We don't know yet how much memory Dashboard will take up, but assuming it's a significant amount then that's an advantage of Sherlock: it's only running when you need it. Will Dashboard be taking up memory even when it's not in current use? And is that memory significant?

According to a reader report on Macintouch, an Apple rep (more or less) agreed with the question "I assume Sherlock is dead?" For me, too, the movie tool would be the key loss. I used to use Watson's, but now that it's not supported any longer, I had switched to Sherlock.
If Apple doesn't ship it, someone will make one, I hope /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I like Sherlock, for the Yellow Pages, Movies, and once in a great while, airline stuff. It's quite useful when you want to go to the movies and call people to invite them /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
If Dashboard has everything from Sherlock, then down with Sherlock, long live the dashboard!

i dunno about movies, but for yellow pages and for flight times, you can just use google.
to get yellow page listings, type in the name, city, and state. e.g. search for blockbuster, pittsburgh, pa to get the blockbuster video locations in the area...
to get flight times, just type in the flight number in google search. e.g. search for united 1512

I know, but Sherlock is a fast way to get it.
Dashboard is even faster.

yeah, although it might even be faster to do the google search i personally much prefer to use the phonebook in sherlock as it gives all the listings and how far away they are plug maps and directions.

Since you brought this up, I fired up Sherlock for the first time since probably early Jaguar (perhaps even Puma), and was really surprised at how quickly it started up. It used to take several minutes. I just might give it a go next time I need a phone number or some such. Thanks for cluing the clueless.
