Can't read cd-r after burning

I'm using OS 10.3.7. I've been burning backup disk images to cd's with no problems until recently. Now when I burn a disk image, the computer can't read it afterward. It's like the session doesn't exist. I tried a fresh new cd, and when I put it back into the drive I got a message saying that it contained no volumes that OS X could read. I've tried repairing disk permissions and running fsck in the UNIX console mode, but it didn't help. Does anyone have any other ideas? Thank you.
