I've found that my Sony Ericsson phone plays midi files as ringtones - i know quicktime will play midi files, but it doesn't seem to export them. What can i use to produce a midi file on a mac?

ok, from the absolute lack of replies and a trawl around the web, it seems that there is no way of converting sound files to midi files.
But what can i use to produce midi files? Someone told me Garageband would do it, but i can't find any way to export anything other than a Garageband file. There must be someone reading this who knows enough about Mac digital audio production to advise.

I have seen this question posted on several Mac forums and so far no one has come up with an application that will do it in the sense of converting a sampled sound file like a wave or AIFF file. Some folks incorrectly state that it is impossible, which is clearly not true as I have used Windows applications that are able to do it, although with less than perfect results.
QT Pro can edit existing .midi files and export them to true .midi format so one solution is to find an existing midi file and edit it down to the time and musical phrase you want and then export it as a standard midi file. This will work and the exported midi file will be recognized as a standard midi file. I have done this and Windows recognized it as a midi and played it in Windows Media Player for PC, although the Windows sequencer is pathetic sounding compared to the QT sequencer.
