I have a 4th gen 40 GB iPod. I have it enabled for disk use and have never had any problems with the feature on my iBook. However, the other day I tried to use it to transfer files from my old laptop running XP, and was told by Windows that the disk was not formatted. Is it possible to use it as an external HD for both Mac and Windows, and if so, what does that involve?
Thanks in advance.

You'd have to format the iPod for Windows use, I believe. Unlike the Shuffle, the full iPod doesn't use a FAT32 filing system. I believe it's FAT32 on Windows, and HFS+ on the Mac.

I'm running MacDrive on the PC to access my mac formatted ipod. It works great and you don't have to alter the ipod at all.

if it works it is a great tip, but not everybody have the ability to install a new software on their PC.
Good tip though, which Windows version do you run?

You needn't get MacDrive. MediaFour--the company that makes MacDrive--makes a less expensive product called XPlay 2 that allows you to mount a Mac-formatted iPod on a Windows PC running Windows 98se or later. MacDrive costs $50. XPlay 2 is $30.
