Do you have a favorite inexpensive (or free) application, utility, or piece of shareware the you just can't live without? If so, Macworld wants to hear from you. Earlier this year, we reviewed 60 great free and low-cost utilities. But we know that there are even more low-cost Mac programs out thereand we want your help in finding them. So please share your ideas, and you favorites could appear in a future issue of Macworld.

This thread was created to correspond specifically with a notice in the forthcoming December 2002 issue of Macworld -- it's the go-to address for sharing picks, etc, and was in no way meant to be repetitive of any existing threads on the boards.

I think it's great that the conversation's already in progress -- surely, there are more utilities or applications coming out that people can endorse?

Two more...

Youpi Key... to assign hotkeys to actions you do often. For example, I set Ctrl+Esc to put put my computer to sleep. That way, I don't have to use the mouse to go to the Apple menu and select sleep.

OmniDiskSweeper... quickly browse your hard drive to find big files that you may want to delete.

The best speed accelerator for Mac OS X is OS 9.

CandyBar by The Icon Factory and Panic Software would be my vote. What a simple elegant way to change all of your icons.

My post wasn't intended to sound like "Aww, we did this already!"

I meant to point Jon to a convo we had about this so he could milk that thread for top picks.

By all means, though, if something groundbreaking has appeared since the last thread, do share. I can't think of anything new, except perhaps:

Wraparound (free utility to break screen barrier in OS X... great for 2 monitors)

+ Audio Hijack 1.5 (this version was released a few hours ago... lets you record sound from any application that plays sound).

Enjoy

I'd say we're really only looking for OS X apps by this point. That other thread is great, and I hope poeple will add to it here.

I really like Iconographer for making OS X icons, using that in conjunction with Photoshop is awesome. Another one is Transmit 2, that is the best FTP program for OS X. I also really like Chimera as my browser. For my iPod, I use Pod2Go or PodNews for downloading text to it. There are so many little apps I use daily I can't think of any...

I haven't seen DragThing mentioned, but it is far and away the most used app on my Mac. If only the dock was scalable with tabs for categories and had all the customizability of DragThing...

Also, JellyfiSSH is good for opening terminals to all my various connections with a simple click. BatChmod is good for forcing permission changes through a GUI too.

Transparent dock is probably the coolest, since the regular dock just looks icky. Meterologist is cool too.
