One app I couldn't live without is SndSampler (http://www.sndsampler.com), the best audio bang for your buck on the Mac. It even handles 24-bit and 32-bit audio. Another great little utility is ColorSieve (http://members.aol.com/markwomack/colorsieve.html).

StreamRipperX is a FREE app which I found on Version Tracker which records streaming MP3 audio into a folder of your choice! (iTunes music folder in my case) Now..instead of scouring the net for mp3s....I simply tune into a favorite radio station and let StreamRipperX record the stream. It breaks the stream into individual tracks!!! Wonderful, indespensable, and...did I mention FREE?
Thumbs up for CHIMERA as well....fast tabbed browsing.

I'd like to add another vote for Carbon Copy Cloner in this period of rapid updates to Mac OS as well as applications CCC completely removes the risks of upgrade because with a quick and easy clone you can always go back. Invaluable.
Also another vote for Proteus . Unless you live under a rock somewhere you have friends on 2-3-4 chat services ... Proteus handles them all smoothly and features a very well designed UI.
My last vote is for VLC it does a great job playing vids to include almost all .avi's. Sure m-player will handle a few avi varients that VLC misses but the VLC UI is so much better that it gets my vote.

I'll try to revive this most useful thread by sharing what I've learned after trying dozens and dozens of freeware and shareware OS X apps. Over the last few weeks I've tried almost all the freeware/shareware apps recommended in the OS X books, Mac magazines such as Macworld, the Macworld special editions, Mac and OS X websites, this helpful thread, and my own searches on VersionTracker. These are my nominations/votes for the best freeware and shareware, and I'd like to know what others think of them as well as hear more suggestions:
System enhancements (for Jaguar):
System enhancements (for Jaguar):
[*]Path Finder (like the Finder on steroids)
[*]FruitMenu (customize the Apple menu)
[*]WindowShade X
[*]PTHPasteboard (multiple clipboards)
[*]PTHClock
System utilities (optimization & maintenance):
[*]DeLocalizer
[*]Macaroni
[*]Maintain
[*]Xbench
Productivity:
[*]Grammarian Pro X
[*]WordService
Internet:
[*]Browser: Chimera (Navigator)
[*]Browser updater: ChimeraKnight
[*]Bookmark management: BookmarkTool
[*]Web services management: Watson
Each of these is best-in-class in its category, is written in Cocoa for optimal system integration, works well with 10.2.3, and can be found on VersionTracker.com. My favorites among these are Path Finder (I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet on this thread), FruitMenu, PTHPasteboard, Grammarian Pro X, and BookmarkTool.
Of all of these, the biggest finds/best secrets/least well-known gems are definitely Path Finder and BookmarkTool, two now indispensible commercial-grade apps I use everyday. Check them out and support excellent freeware & shareware!
