Need a bit help regarding changing the desktop.
I know very little about macs. I have accidently changed some settings which has meant my desktop looks very different,, I think it said it was changing to classic view but not sure..
How can I return to the default desktop,,,ie, icons along the bottom of screen etc..
I am using os 9

OS 9 as far back as I can remember never put icons along the bottom. The only thing that normally does that is OS X's dock (but that's not OS 9).
You can manually place icons along the bottom of the desktop if you so choose.
I think I need more clarification to be more helpful.

Did too, did too. You could drag a folder to the bottom of the OS 9 screen, and it imbedded there with a tab showing. Also there is the Control Strip that a lot of people had a love/hate relationship with -- very near the bottom of the screen. Sorry, but this still doesn't solve Nenick's issue though. [Edit] I wonder if he's talking about Simple Finder?]

Those aren't icons Grant. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
You might be right about Simple Finder. I personally never even played with it.

More info needed...icons?
Yes, they appear during boot up, then disappear, yes they are in the control strip, which you can move or leave open or shut, or hide...and you can leave files and folders in place at the bottom if snap to grid isn't selected...

Another semantics perfectionist. An icon can be almost anything that isn't text, so I disagree with you. Even if it doesn't look like a regular file icon. I never used Simple Finder either, and had to think for a while to come up with the name. I actually had to look up Control Strip it's been so long.

A little more info on what model Mac you have might help. It sounds like you have both OSX and OS9 (Classic) installed if the 'icons' are resting along the bottom, or maybe the Control Strip /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Maybe try this: If there is a white icon that looks like a light switch (System Preferences) click that->click Startup Disk, and select Mac OSX then Restart in the dialog box. No crystal ball makes it difficult /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
