My internal cd-cdrw drive is not working properly!

I have a 500mhz imac with the slot loading MATSHITA CD-RW CW-7121 drive. Most of the time it will not read a cd. Sometimes it does. Is there hope in fixing the drive?

update It will read any factory music cd, nothing else. I tried my mac os 9 disk, cd-r, nothing else will read.

another update after updating to panther (i was working with 10.1) now all media seems to work, I tried burning with toast but I get errors from that.
