It seems to be impossible to change any of the information associated with my Apple ID on their website, as the next time I log in half of it has reverted back again, and the only 'help' they provide is lots of of pages saying how easy to use they've made their website. How do I delete an Apple ID and start again? There's no obvious way to do it, and no official email to ask.

Try deleting the cookie associated with Apple's website from your browser. For Safari, go to Preferences, Security, Cookies and delete any cookie for Apple's website.

Didn't help I'm afraid.
I've just had an email back saying that Apple IDs cannot be deleted -- i.e. they really do store your information forever, as half of it can't be changed to gobbledegook. They also suggested that if I find their website slow to use why don't I try broadband, which is very cheeky, as most of the internet-using population doesn't have broadband (I think it's only about 50% even in America), and most areas -- including mine -- are too far away from a base station to be able to use it. In any case the complaint wasn't so much about the speed as the number of pages it's necessary to click through to do anything, e.g. on clicking a link which says 'Log in' the visitor is directed to another page saying 'Do you want to log in' before being taken to yet another where it's actually possible to do so.
I've just read their privacy policy, which basically says 'please give us as much information about yourself as possible so we can sell you stuff. You can unsubscribe from our mailing lists if you really want to, but for anything else, tough.' It manages to violate the Data Protection Act in at least one place, and the spirit of it in a further two, as well as Directive 95/46/EC 'The data subject ... has the right to demand the rectification, deletion or blocking of data that is incomplete, inaccurate or isn't being processed in compliance with the data protection rules,' (quote actually from Wikipedia), of which I've written to argue with them.

I just changed my password, and updated MasterCard w/o a problem. By chance did you just close the window, and NOT click continue? A long shot, but just maybe you caught them during server maintenance. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

No, no, and I've tried several times. The one thing I really can't change is the name field; it will stay changed in one section but never seem to have changed at all in another. I've tried different browsers too.
The people who reply to emails are very nice, and say they agree with some of what I'm saying, but then point out that that is their own personal view, doesn't represent Apple, and they can't actually do anything.

Well thats a bummer. And it would do NO good just to go ahead and create a whole new account because you've already got your name, address, and most the important stuff with Apple ID. My point: It would be silly to create a whole new one. Sorry to hear they can't do much, but kinda glad they did agree with your problems...and that doesn't resolve the issue. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
