Anyone having trouble with their PB's not acknowledging cds or dvds when inserted? All of a sudden, whenever I put a disc in, it hums for 2 seconds 3x and then spits it back out.
At first i had thought it was just this one cd but I tried it with other cds and now a dvd and it has the same problem? What gives? is it due to the 10.3.8 update??? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

A good ole PRAM zap never hurt anything, try that. Can you boot off of a CD? Holding C key down at startup.
It is a classic symptom of a failed CD player though.

Hi
Unfortunately, my [former Mac] Ti 1GHz, 1GB, 60GB, SuperDrive, AP had the optical drive replaced because the CD-R burning capability failed and right before I sold it your problem cropped up on the replaced drive. Now, the new owner is probably going to need it replaced again. Well, that is if they determine it a hardware failure. Seems odd the number of problems some of Apple's drive have. As far as I know, they have only used the UJ-815, UJ-825, and UJ-835 drives produced by Matshita (Panasonic) for SuperDrives and other drives produced by Matshita for the combo drives but I can't recall the model numbers.

I have had this problem on my PowerBook for over a year now. Usually i just keep reinserting the disc until it stays in, and it works fine. Sometimes, especially with personally burned DVDs (DVD-R or DVD+R, I can't tell since they have labels) No amount of reinsertion helps.
I was considering buying one of those discs that has little brushes on the bottom to clean the lens. Has anyone tried this yet?
If anybody has any advice on this, please let me know, because now my mom's PowerBook (which is less than a year old) is exhibiting this same symptom. I may call Apple this week.
