In early February Web search engine company Google Inc. took the wraps of Google Maps, a still-in-beta service created as an alternative to MapQuest.com and other mapping services. When Google Maps first debuted in February, Mac users had to use Firefox or another browser to get the service to work, since Google Maps didn't support Safari. Now it does. more

Cool,
Now when some chick tells me to "Get Lost," I'll have the witty retort, "With my AirPort-enabled iBook and a hotspot, that will be impossible."
I'm sure that will change the outcome of our social exchange! ;-)

How sweet it is. I no longer dread using a map online like I had to when using Yahoo Maps or Mapquest.

Yeah, I remember trying maps.google.com on Safari a couple weeks ago, only to be disappointed that a great web site didn't work with Safari. I was using it last night on Safari and it worked just fine. I'm glad to see Google support the Mac community with Safari support. Ideally, everything would be W3C compliant and that would be enough... yes, I know, very naive of me to think that! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I love that you can type in the name of a place you want to go and it will show you where it is.

Is there a version limitation on WHICH Safari you can use with Google Maps ? I am stuck on 1.0.3 and when I try to go to the Google map site I get told it doesn't work with my browser.

I first tried Google Maps a week or so ago, and it was working fine with Safari. I wondered why people were saying it was incompatible.
I guess they had already implemented the changes, but were waiting to announce the new Safari compatibility.

Very clean. I had one feedback for them. A From/To map shows a line for driving directions, but this line is not present when you wish to print.

Very nice interface. They need to fix some content though. They misnamed RT. 84 going through CT as the Wilbur Cross Pkwy (that's actually RT. 15 in CT)

Hurrah Google! Looks like it'll be a great system... but first, do try to work out some of the bugs, okay?
Not sure if any Americans have had the trouble I've had, or any Canadians for that matter, but I found Google's results laughable when trying to find directions about a week ago. I started in my hometown, about 100 km from Toronto, with a destination in Mississauga, just west of Toronto. Google's directions suggested that I travel past Mississauga, north past Toronto, and onward to Georgian Bay, then turn around, pass through Toronto again, Mississauga again, and past my hometown to the small town of Paris, about 80 kilometres in the wrong direction. Eventually, the directions cut through Hamilton on the way to Mississauga, and, following those directions I would have eventually found my way to Mississauga... except a trip that should have taken a little over an hour (by Yahoo's directions) would have taken well over seven hours with Google's directions, and would have added almost 700 kilometres to my poor old wreck's odometer.
Methinks I'll stick to Yahoo for a little while longer, and let Google know about the problem with my hometown.

Yeah - I have version 1.0.3 as well, and it DOES NOT WORK.
The message says:
<Your browser is not supported by Google Maps just yet. We currently support the following browsers:
IE 5.5 (download: Windows)
Firefox 0.8
(download: Windows Mac Linux)
Netscape 7.1 (download: Windows Mac Linux)
Mozilla 1.4
(download: Windows Mac Linux)
We are working on supporting Safari.>
I do not have an answer to why this is, but it seems that all the pimpleheads on this page are not interested in sharing information with us today.
The Google team has been notified.

Not here. All the directions I've asked for have been spot on.
