I recently bought a LaCie external DVD burner for my ibook becuase it is not equipped with a Superdrive. I installed iDVD4 on my computer followed by the DVD burner software. When I tried to open iDVD, I got an error message saying "iDVD could not be opened because the required hardware could not be found" I did some research and downloaded the iDVD "easter egg" hack. Now when I open iDVD, it loads for a second and then unexpectedly quits. Does anybody know what to do here? I really want to burn DVDs.

You may not want to invest in the iLife05 upgrade, but this is fixed in iDVD5 and it now burns to external drives without any work around (amoung some other nice features).
However, by the "easter egg hack" I'm assuming you mean the "Hurz" and "Pfurz" files that should be placed into your home directory. After those are there you need to press the Ctrl key while selecting the Burn DVD menu option (under the file menu). Do not select the little burn button in the iDVD window.
This should then bring up a little pop up window which will show your external DVD drive. Select your drive, click OK and iDVD will begin the burning process.

Here's the hack that will allow you to burn to an external drive or disk image: Link. It works very well

Hello guys,
do you mean that if I have a new G5 with a COMBO and iLife '05, I can buy an external device (Lacie Lightscribe) and use it directly with iDVD?
It would be a nice solution. Here in Belgium the Lacie with Lightscribe does not cost more than the difference in the prices of the G5 Combo and the G5 Superdrive.

Last weekend I've installed iDVD 5 on my iBook G3 (running on MacOS 10.3.8), but... it will not run on my iBook. Before it quits I get a message saying something like: "iDVD can't open due to missing hardware". It is either referring to a missing Superdrive or a missing G4 733MHz processor (as Apple says that is required to install). Does anyone know how to workaround this? Do the "Hurz" and "Pfurz" files also work on a G3?
I do have an external LaCie 8x DVD writer and use Toast to burn DVDs. I want to use iDVD for creating DVD menus and saving disc images only.

The G3 is your problem. iDVD needs a G4. Besides, it would take ages to encode video for a DVD with a G3.

Well, I don't have to watch iDVD encoding movies on my iBook... For me time is not an issue, encoding can be done overnight.
My question is, is there a way of running iDVD 5 on a G3?
Thanks

You gonna have to locate a hacker you would be able to alter one of the iDVD recource files using a HEX editor.
