Hi Ya'll...Question. My husband and I each have an account on his IMAC (Panther). I want to be able to listen to the music in his playlist - on his account. How can i export his music to my account? I have tried messing with it for a few hours....but nothing works....THANKS FOR YOUR TIME.

Hi,
You can always put the iTunes Music folder from his music folder in the Users-->Shared folder. Than just add to library I believe.
If you want all his playcounts and settings just copy his iTunes Music Library data folders over to your Music folder in your personal account. So now if you have his music in the shared folder and his library files in your music folder all the music should just show up in your iTunes I believe.
Wow that is almost confusing to me.
Hope that helps!

Hi
More specifically, move...
/Users/hisuser/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music
...To...
/Users/Shared/iTunes/iTunes Music
Then, copy (not move)...
/Users/hisuser/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library
/Users/hisuser/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
...To...
/Users/youruser/Music/iTunes/iTunes 4 Music Library
/Users/youruser/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music Library.xml
Finally, for each of you...Launch iTunes, go to iTunes [menu]-->Preferences-->Advanced and changed your Library location to harddrive/Users/Shared/iTunes/iTunes Music
NOTES:
Because of permissions, you may have to be logged into different accounts for different steps.
You move his iTunes Music folder to the Shared folder so you don't run into permission problems when others try to access. The Shared folder should be open to any user of the computer.
As stated by Dubbs, you don't need to move the iTunes Library files if you don't need/want playcounts, ratings, etc.
If you do not copy his library files, you skip the final step and instead, launch iTunes-->File-->Add to Library... and navigate and choose the folder /Users/Shared/iTunes/iTunes Music (the actual folder is what you want to highlight and select Choose)
P.S. I hope I didn't add to the confusion. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hi
If you have your settings the same, such as keep iTunes Music folder organized...Than since it would just be the exact same setup it should just the Library files. I haven't done it in quite a long time, so I can't completely recall the exact steps iTunes goes through itself with this procedure.
Put simply, I believe, your question answer is a 'yes'.

Hello iTuners!
I have been watching the conversations with great interest and tried the procedure as listed by MacCheeta. However, the music wouldn't show up when I opened the iTunes application, so I had it "Add Songs" and it did. Now, all the play lists I created have disappeared. I wonder what I have done wrong? I'd like to just put it all back the way it was before I messed with it! As of now, the music folder is in the shared folder. Any good advice on this situation? You guys are much smarter than I am!
Many thanks. Brian

Hi MacCheetah,
Well, I followed your direction and it sort of worked. I was able to listen to all songs on both accounts, but if I added a track on one account the other account didn't acknowledge the update. I played around with it for a bit with no luck. I decided to return everything back to how I found it as this wasn't what I wanted.
I am not sure I am clear with this. The first thing I did before moving files around was click on "share music" in iTunes, but I hadn't been able to see my music on the other account. Which "share music" options are you referring to specifically?

In reply to:
If you checkmark the 'Share Music' from one of the popdown menus you don't have to do much at all ... when you log into another persons account you should see their music on the left hand side and you can listen to it... Why move all that music around?

The 'music' won't be added into the library of the auxillary user. It should be on the left as something like - originalusername music (where the originalusername is the owner of the music)... like a playlist sort of thing .. To clarify for us though please give us: Operating System version, version of iTunes (because the sharing of music wasn't introduced into every version of iTunes ...)

Hi,
iTunes 4.7.1
10.3.8
It worked! Sort of. All my settings indicated that I was able to share music from my account to the second account, yet I wasn't seeing the playlist "users Music". Only after I deleted every song off of the second account's iTunes was I able to see my music in the playlist. Weird. In this case deleting all songs wasn't a problem as there were only 10 songs on the second account.
Unfortunately, after I closed iTunes on the second account, I haven't been able see the playlist of my music anymore. I am seeing the second users on my account but not the other way around. Is this a problem with iTunes or am I missing something?

both users only need to be logged in to use the "share music" option in itunes. following the directions earlier in the thread will allow you to share the same library among different users on the computer without needing others to be logged on with itunes open. the BIG downside to following those directions is that once more than one user starts adding music to the "shared" library, permissions start to be a problem when you want to edit any song info, and it also randomly (from my experience) will decide it doesn't allow one user to import one day, the other user the next, and the following day everything is back to normal. permissions are a real pain. i followed some directions a while ago which i believe included doing some stuff in terminal that (if i remember right) would automatically change permissions to read/write for everyone you've assigned to a specific group, and that worked for the most part, but i've since lost the directions and haven't been able to find them again. if anyone knows and would like to share, or know of a better solution for the permissions problem, PLEASE tell me as my girlfriend has been nagging me for too long to fix the computer again to share the itunes and iphoto libraries.

I've been trying to figure out how to share one iTunes library with all three users on our Mac (OSX 10.3.8, iTunes 4.7).
Here's what I did to accomplish that:
The first step was combining all three iTunes folders (all of us had added new songs since setting up our accounts) into one comprehensive folder. I downloaded a folder synchronizing freeware app to accomplish that task.
After I did that, I moved that comprehensive iTunes folder into the Shared folder and replaced all three of the users' Music->iTunes folder with an alias of the Shared->iTunes folder. Now whenever one of us adds new music, it shows up in all of our iTunes libraries.
I did have to log into each user's account to make the changes in their iTunes folder.
After I went to the advanced preference and selected the alias of Shared->iTunes as the new library, it still wasn't showing all of the songs in the library. I did some research and found that by dragging and dropping the iTunes folder onto the iTunes library icon on the left at the top of the playlists, it will update the library.
I repaired permissions, cleaned up some duplicate songs from within iTunes, and now all three of us share a common iTunes folder.
The only drawback that I've seen so far is that the other two users' new playlists are gone (I used my iTunes folder for the main iTunes folder in the Shared folder so we only have my playlists). The other users didn't mind that, so I didn't sweat it.
So, does this sound like an acceptable fix, or did I overlook potential problems? (I kept all three original iTunes folders, and ran a back up before attempting this, just in case!)
