I have borrowed some discs burnt with MP3's, and after importing 20 songs or so, the iTunes application hangs. It is very frustrating, as if I dont restart the computer straight away, the whole computer freezes, resulting in having to reset by holding the start button for 5 secs. Am I doing something wrong?
I have a G5 iMac 1.8G, 768MB, running 10.3.7, and using iTunes 4.7

How many discs are you using, and with how many of those is iTunes experiencing this problem?
I'm in the process of importing all my CD's into iTunes and I'm finding the exact same problem with about 1% of the CD's. I've been assuming that the CD's have experienced damage of some sort or have degraded.

So far, it seems its only the discs I have borrowed (10 of). I am not sure though, they may have been initially burnt on a windows system (maybe this would make a difference). It's just very frustrating!! And time consuming!!!

If the ones causing the hanging are all borrowed (and 10 of 'em) then it seems it might not be due to the discs being damaged or degraded.
I'm wondering if they were burnt on Windows as Data CD's and if that might be the problem. I know not all CD players can play MP3 music burnt as data CD... but I don't know if there is incompatibility between Windows and Macs with those.
Hmmm... I'm at a loss for the moment.

Ok. Have finally and painstakingly imported all the songs to iTunes - after quite a few system freezes etc. Now I find that maybe the problem may not have been the importing of the songs, as when I browse through the artists and then pick a song, the system again crashes... might be a bug in iTunes. I havent got the latest download, as I am currently using a very slow phone line connection at the moment... (am in the process of getting satellite connection, just waiting on the installer now!!) so, am hoping an update may fix the problem. Thanks for your advice.

Not sure if this will help, but have you repaired permissions recently?
That can frequently rectify an application's frequent crashes.

have tried the repair permissions, still doesnt seem to work.
Currently have 6.23 GB of songs in iTunes, wondering if there is a memory limit or something.
Am running OS 10.3.7, on a G5 1.8 GHz iMac, with 768MB SDRAM, iTunes v4.7

Don't think it's a memory limit. I've got 8,057 songs at 31.52GB.
