Aloha,
I am interested in knowing if anyone has successfully converted an old slot loading G3 iMac to a G4 by simply replacing the G3 CPU with a CPU from a Sawtooth G4. I recently upgraded my G4 and now I have the old G4 500 CPU, my iMac still performs well, but could use a speed boost. I know that many companies are doing similar conversions for very little, but I live in a rural part of the Hawaiian Islands and shipping is an issue. Also I already have the G4 500 CPU that i want to use...I don't need to buy one. I thought that since they were released around the same time the chances were good that the parts might be able to be interchanged...
Am I kidding myself or is this possible. Any help from someone with more knowledge of system architechture and/or personal experiance is extremely helpful!

Hi
Well, The tray loading iMac G3 had a removable CPU daughtercard but even that only had a chance of working with something like a Pismo (PowerBook G3 2000) CPU daughtercard. Every iMac since than has had an integrated (soldered) CPU. The only way these companies can offer upgrades is to unsolder the old CPU and resolder a new one on. That's also why they need you to send in your Mac. So, unfortunately, either keep your 500MHz daughtercard for emergencies or it's "For Sale" time.
