The WRT54G is a very popular router so if you run into trouble and need support, help will be easy to find here and on all other Mac support discussion forums.

I'm hoping I will be able to plug it in and just use it.
Ya think?!?!
Thanks for all the help....

In most cases - yes - you could just plug it in and use it. However, this is not what I would recommend, since running an "open wireless network" opens up your entire LAN to access from anyone in range with a wireless computer. You should configure some form of wireless security - preferably WPA if all your wireless client computers support it, otherwise use 128-bit WEP.

Even though I said a couple of posts back, that I live in a rural area, with acres of land between me and my nearest neighbor....you still think I need to set up security???
Wouldn't that complicate the use of the APExpress??
BTW, I just ordered the WRT54G from Buy.com for $45 after a $10 rebate /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Thanks again....

Sorry - forgot about that point /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
In your case, setting up security doesn't seem to be an issue.

If that simplifies things, then I am VERY happy!! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Got me thinking though, if there is no Mac software with this router I have now ordered...how do I set it up? With the Airport software??
Thanks again...

Linksys routers are set up by running a web browser on the Mac, pointing to http://192.168.1.1 . This is explained very nicely in the user manual - there is a whole chapter devoted to setting up this router using a web browser and nothing else.

I made a web page of Linksys mac wireless setup steps with you want a detailed walkthrough. The screenshots are a different model LinkSys, but any differences will be mostly cosmetic.

I guess this is similar to the html page that loads for my DSL modem.
Then I guess there is nothing left to do at this moment...except wait for the router to arrive.
Which I'm sure will happen when I'm away on a biz trip next week...... /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Thanks once again...

Carlson:
Have looked over your excellent web page on Linksys setup.
Just got the Linksys WRT54G, but won't actually try to set it up until I get back from a biz trip, mid next week.
I have one or two questions to ask:
I have a hard wired ethernet network in my house, but also need to connect wirelessly with a Windoze XP Dell laptop (my company gives me this...not my choice).
I have a DSL line.
Can I plug the hard wire EN into my Mac and still connect wirelessly with the XP?
Is there an advantage to doing this??? Would the connection be faster with the hard wire?
Or should I just forget the hard wire EN and use the Airport extreme card?
I do have a Laserwriter pro 600 that I still use, was plugged into an EN hub, and would like to plug that into the Linksys router.
Will I be able to connect to this printer both wirelessly and wired?
Your thoughts would be much appreciated....
Thanks

Want to ask you the same basic questions I asked Carlson, with perhaps one more.

Will I be able to connect to this printer both wirelessly and wired?
Is there a good way to start?? Like shut down the Mac first, then plug in the router, then startup the Mac???
Or is that a really stupid question? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
Your thoughts would be much appreciated....
Thanks

- yes you certainly can cable the Mac to the router, and have the PC connect wirelessly
- for internet access, cable and wireless connections will provide equivalent speeds
- yes you can cable the Laserwriter Pro 600 to the router (via the Localtalk to ethernet adapter you already have). Since this printer communicates using the Appletalk communications protocol, and since the Linksys wireless router will not bridge Appletalk network traffic between devices connected wirelessly and devices connected via cable, you won't be able to access this printer from your Macs wirelessly (only from Macs cabled to the router)
- plug the modem into the Linksys's internet WAN port. Power down the modem for a few minutes, then power up again. Then power up the router, and wait a minute for it to boot up. Then start your computers.

Great! This explains two issues I have with my current set-up.
Not being able to use the Laserwriter wirelessly....now I know I must use the hard wire ENET for the Mac.
Second: Before, if I was coonected hard wire, and tried to connect with the XP laptop, I would get a msg asking me to switch the connection.
I assume that with this router, I won't see that question pop up again on the XP because of the router. Is that correct?
Thanks so much....

You asked "if I was connected hard wire, and tried to connect with the XP laptop, I would get a msg asking me to switch the connection". Could you elaborate:
(1) was the PC connected via hard wire, and you then unplugged the wire so it would connect wirelessly?
(2) did this message come from the PC?
