OSX Personal Web Sharing to publish web pages???
i am trying to do this. and it seems simple enough. got all the sharing on for sure. but my web site is only accessible from computers within our network. i am using a link-sys router BEFSR41 and optimum online cable with a surfboard sf4100 modem. the address should be http://192.168.1.102/~mrucci/
i think it has something to do with link-sys settings, which can be accessed at http://192.168.1.1/ and entering username : admin and no password.
any help would be extremely appreciated thanks so much.

One thing you need to know is that all the IP addresses you listed here are only valid within your network. We can't reach them that way. You said your router is at 192.168.1.1. Well guess what, my router is also 192.168.1.1! How can that be?
The local addresses (192.xxx.x.x) are like rooms in a building. Your room is room 101, and so is mine. How can that be? They're both Room 101, but in different buildings. You haven't described which building you're in. If all you told a friend was that you were in Room 101, that would not tell them where in the city you are. You could be in any building.
You need to provide the IP address of your router as seen from the outside, This is in your linksys settings and was provided by your ISP. Also, I think you will need to establish port forwarding so that outside computers can identify which inside computer to reach. I can't explain that part very well so I'll leave it to someone else.

ok
the ip i mention http://192.168.1.102/~mrucci/ was just what i took from the file-sharing tab in the sys preferences. i went to http://whatismyip.com/ and that turns up with 67.81.41.204 and when i try sticking that in i get a username and password box.
am i getting anywhere?
the end result would be for me to have my sites folder be accessed like a website by any and all.
thanks so much for the help.

An IP address of 192.168.1.102 means you are using a home router. (LinkSys)
Read about setting up a Mac server behind a home router for a discussion of how to set up port forwarding on a LinkSys.
Use the internal IP address within your home, the external IP address from outside.
