I'd go for the iMac - it has a smaller footprint, looks better, and will work fine for what you need. Plus, if you are staring at the screen reading and writing, the CRT may be better for your eyes.
Aren't you contradicting yourself?
I have an iMac, and I love it! I use it for school, so I also have to do wordprocessing, since I mostly have to write papers and stuff...

Either one should satisfy you greatly. Yes, there are differences that may "push" you one way or the other.
CRT vs. LCD. CRTs have better viewing angles, mostly better coloring and contrast, and don't have the possibility of having dead pixels. LCDs are also nice. They are lighter, in the case of the iMac can be positioned more easily than having to move your entire computer, and the new ones are bright and quite nice.
They come with generally the same RAM, HDs, CPUs, GPUs, Aiport, ethernet, FireWire, USB, etc.
Obviously different looks, dimensions, weights, etc.
Price tag. The eMac is cheaper. Because of it's design (CRT use mostly and it is bigger)
Those are basically the differences. You should pick what you "feel" is a better fit for you.
Apple's RAM deal does very little unless the unit comes stock with at least 512MB (so you would get a 512MB for $40).
Those are my insights and opinions anyway. Good Luck and Have Fun!!

These are good points, but don't forget that while the CRT has better viewing angles, the iMac's LCD is completely adjustable. If you don't get the stand with the eMac, it will be harder to adjust your computer for various viewing angles.
Also, you will likely never notice a dead pixel in everyday usage, as they are so small. Also, if you ever wanted to move your computer, the iMac does have that handy neck. Ohh - an iBook is on CNN! gotta go.

I have an eMac and I absolutely love it. I would recomend buying the tilt and swivel stand if you buy it though. I use my eMac for Graphic Design work so I decided on a CRT. So far I have had no display problems whatsover with my eMac. The only negative I feel I have to mention is the fan in my eMac is rather loud. iTunes and an iSub fixed that though images/icons/grin.gif
Good luck with your purchase,

Performa 6200CD that he's had since 1996
Not bad machines, really. We bought ours back in '95. Sold it in '98. Didn't upgrade too much on it. Spent $95 or so on a 32MB RAM chip. Got it up to Mac OS 8.0. It had the ultrafast PowerPC 603 @ 75MHz. images/icons/grin.gif
Dell which is used only for Internet surfing and word processing
I agree. I have a Dell 4100. I barely trust it for that much. Every so often a few games or so.
Sorry, don't have an iBook. I am still trying to sell my PowerBook G3 Lombard to get a "SuperBook."
Nevertheless. Good Luck and Have Fun with whichever you choose!! You shouldn't be dissapointed.
