Here's an example of what I'm trying to figure out. I recently downloaded Firefox 1.0.3 and I still have 1.0. Do I need to keep them both? 1.0 is 25.9 MB. 1.0.3 is only 8.7MB. Is that because it is considered an upgrade?
What I'm concerned about is that as Firefox and other browsers or programs I have continue to upgrade, I could, for example, eventually have 10 or more different Firefox dmg files in my applications folder.

Ah. That's your problem. You don't store DMG files in the applications folder. DMG (disk image) files are containers for the applications that go into the Applications folder. Drag and drop the Firefox icon in the mounted disk into the Applications folder. Unmount the disk image, then nuke it. This goes for all OS X applications.

I think you are comparing sizes for the compressed download which unstuffs/unzips into the installer - which will be result into a considerably bigger file once it is installed.

No problem Joe. It's a very common misconception. Developers are beginning to assume users know to do this (which is obviously an assumption they shouldn't be making).
