Hello all,
I have never owned a Mac before but am considering getting a 12" iBook for mainly Office applications, but would like to know how well the iBook can be expected to perform with other things, such as 3D. For example, will the iBook run games such as Second Life.
Also, what is the bundled office software like wrt MS compatibility (all my existing work is in Word format on my PC)? Is Mac Office any good?
For the money, I have not been able to find a PC laptop that is anywhere near as portable or as good quality.
Your advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Rob.

For basic stuff like word processing, web surfing, etc. the iBook definitely kicks butt (mine has for the last 3 years). I don't use mine for 3-D stuff really, so I'm afraid I can't answer your 2nd question (besides, my iBook has a G3 chip and I understand the G4 processors in the current iBook line are much better for video and graphics-intensive work). The Mac version of Microsoft Office seems to have no problem working with files made in the Windows version of MS Office. Good luck with whatever you decide to go with.

Hi,
I play Halo on my 1Ghz 12" ibook. For the most part it works very well, but when there are more than three or four aliens shooting at me (in the game, not real life) the iBook will slow down. The image quality is clear and smooth, but it will slow down. Now the slow down maybe due to my refusal to invest in a memory upgrade, so keep in mind that my experience may differ due to minimal RAM. My brother in-law has a 1Ghz 12" PowerBook with 700+ RAM and he does not experience the slow down I do. Now whether his machine is smoother due to memory or the graphics card I can't say. Personally, I wouldn't buy an iBook if I wanted good gaming, as that is what an x-Box or Playstation is for.

Thanks for the replies!
I don't want the iBook for gaming, but it would be nice to know if it can handle a degree on 'fun stuff', if you know what I mean ;-) I just wondered if it would crash and burn at the thought of anything 3D/game like.
The reason I asked about Second Life specifically is because my brother works for Linden Labs and it's nice to be able to check out what he's working on.
