Change aspect ratio?

I had an AVI video sized at 608 x 272 (wide screen, very wide), but when I converted to DV with the intent to edit and burn in iMovie, the DV created was 720 x 480.
Any ideas to get it to a 'letterbox' view so the image isn't distorted?

I don't think you can in iMovie 4, but with iLife 5 and iMovie HD you might be able to. I'm not sure
