Note to All, Do not shoot the messenger.
This link tells how to make the iMac support dual displays without mirroring. It is a hack but seems even to work with Tiger.

This was profiled on Macworld as well but I could not find the link where it was done.
Cheers,
Droid

Radeon 9600 (128MB).
Looks good. I've read complaints from people referring to the 9600XT that Apple once used in G5 towers to the 9600 now used (apparently a downgrade). Does anyone know what the difference between the two is?

Aren't you glad that Apple upgraded the machines w better video card and more RAM. Two important fact that we have been complaining about for a while? Well, I'll tell you what you should say: thanks to everybody who complained.

Good to know that it still works with Tiger. I've been running dual displays off of an iMac flat panel, eMac and iBook and would have difficulty living without it.
I've been putting off buying a new Mac for awhile until I found something that I felt would fill my needs and deliver performance at a great price point. This new iMac (along with the extra drive space, memory, included wireless and Canadian price drop) seems to fit that bill nicely. Thank you Apple.

P.S. Droid - Nova Scotia rocks. It's been my "home away from home" for the last 3 years....

Compare this to the bottom of the line PowerMac...
With the 17" 2GHz iMac you get:
1) Twice the RAM
2) Twice the HD
3) Twice the Video
4) Airport Extreme
5) Bluetooth
6) Dual Layer Super Drive
7) Faster Processer
8) Faster Front Side Bus
9) Built-in 17" Display (you can upgrade to a 20" for $300!)
For the same price.
The PowerMac does give you optical audio in (both have optical out) and PCI-X slots.
You can compare this value to any PC maker's offering. Apple will still come out on top.

OMG, something is really wrong with the PowerMacs divison at Apple (or Apple thinks I am crazy) ;-)
Why would one buy a PowerMac 1.8 when it can have a 2.0 Imac for the same price ?
Wonder when will Apple give the single proc G5 and a 2-2.3 ghz cpu... ok the 2.3 won't happen, but at leeeeast 2.0.
Oh and why not lower the price as well ?
And a cherry on top ?

We noticed the same thing at the same time. See my previous post for a line-item comparison. I think people should jump on this deal!

Correct ! But I haven't realized that you actually get MUUUCH more with the iMac. Wow... good call !
Only downside, can't change the video card in the iMac... arrrgh. I have a Radeon 9800 just waiting for a G5... 8-(

It's not a matter of complaining. I think the users get it right.
All Macs need to stay competitive and run adequately for new users or switchers or they'll die a death.
This is a good first step, now to fix the screen resolution which is low by PC standards (well by anybody's standards).
Another step in the right direction would be better hard drive performance although this could challenge the desktop G5s. These are way over priced and don't have much headroom for performance improvements.
The "New Apple" is starting to look like it knows how to compete. First with iPods now with the iMacs and Mac Minis. Keep the good news rolling!
