Remember that the bottom 2 models of the PowerMac do not have PCI-X slots. The trade off is with the iMac with a built-in display-can't use 2 23" displays. The iMac has the edge when going middle to upper model compared to the bottom model of PowerMac.
The thing we have to remember is that the iPod is Apple's main money maker. The iMac & iBook models are quickly becoming the top end Macs. The PowerBooks & PowerMacs have stagnated for at least the past two years. The more they stagnate the more Steve Jobs will complain about low PowerMac & PowerBook sales. This will result in less time & other resources being spent on the PowerMac PowerBook models & more on the iMac & IBook models. Then this cycle will repeat itself like it has a couple of times or more already.
It's great to see the iMac get better. I just wish they could improve the PowerMac by as much.

I have to admit, this update addresses my complaints about the iMac G5. Now that the machine comes with 512MB of memory and a 128mb ATI 9600 card, this is truly a nice machine. Using Halo as the gaming example, there is an 81% increase in performance from this upgrade. This of course will also translate into nice Quartz/Core image based processing as well.
Very nice!

Great news! With MacOS X's minimum responsive memory threshold and Tiger's Core Image threshold now met it's hard to find anything to complain about with these two models. I hope the failing/swelling/exploding capacitor issue with the 20" version of the iMac has been fixed. I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that the Mac mini will get a similar MacOS X Tiger support upgrade!

Santa comes early this year - as someone said earlier, what could people possibly find to complain about with this iMac - the middle one will be on my desk this summer, playing World of Warcraft, Sims 2, and Command & Conquer Generals. At last, an iMac that is ready to rock right out of the box.
Thanks Apple /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This looks like at very good looking machine at $1300. I have nothing to complain about this machine anymore. Airport, Bluetooth, RAM, HD all great. Anyonw know when apple will be updating their aiport card to handle all the new MIMO stuff that's been coming out for the past few weeks? I would love to do wireless on the G5 iMac at 108MBits/sec. Go Apple!!

Return it? Can you do that in 30 days or does it have to be within 14 days?
Or just sell it to your neighbor /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is great news for the iMac user types. What about an upgrade for the Power Mac line? Could a major upgrade be in the near future?

In reply to:

Why would one buy a PowerMac 1.8 when it can have a 2.0 Imac for the same price ?

You already own a good monitor you want to keep. A CRT if you do graphics or pre-press, or a nice 24" widescreen.
You need to add a SCSI adaptor for writing backups to tape, or DVD images to DLT tape.
You want to add another internal hard drive and mirror them for safety, or stripe them for speed.
And, finally, you need to shave a few hundred off the cost of the 2 GHz tower and get the same things.

Check out this link for the differences between the 5200, 9600, 9650 and 9600XT.
http://store.apple.c...2.1.7.0.0.3.3.0

It turns out that the 9600XT and 9650 seem to have very similar performance. The exception being that the 9650 has one Dual Link port (to drive the 30" Cinema HD Display) and 256 MB VRam.
Regarding the 5200 and 9600: the 9600 is a slightly faster performer and has double the video memory. Another thing that may make a difference between performance of these two chips is their drivers. If the Radeon 9600 has a better written driver, performance may be higher than expected relative to its 5200 predecessor.

In reply to:

This is a good first step, now to fix the screen resolution which is low by PC standards (well by anybody's standards).

Are you talking about the iMac or their portables?
In reply to:

Another step in the right direction would be better hard drive performance although this could challenge the desktop G5s. These are way over priced and don't have much headroom for performance improvements.

What's wrong with the hard drive performance of the iMac? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
