Great boxes, it's good to see apple getting more competitive.
My wishlist:
512 on ALL machines (at least). Low end eMac is still 256.
I'd love to see gigabit ethernet on all machines as well, now that apple is doing "nodes" for rendering with more apps this makes more and more sense. How much more can it cost?
That's about it. Can't wait for the next iBook update, it might finally be time for me to upgrade.

To change the subject - are there no DLT or other backups that run via firewire? Can you run a raid or do mirroring with an external FW drive? It seems nowadays the only time people really need PCI slots is for upgrading video cards. It would be nice to see a version of the mini or the imac with a swappable video card, that's the only expansion they can't really do right now.

super! ... 512 MB of RAM!
I wonder what people will complain about now.

Why Apple doesn't make 1GB of RAM standard in PowerMacs.
If they've realized even their low-end machines need 512, why do they persist in shipping memory-crippled supercomputers in their power rigs and calling them ready to go??
Premium price? OK if you got it.
Premium product? Fer shure.
Premium performance??
Only after you buy memory, a real mouse, a better keyboard........

9600XT is about twice as fast as 9600.
A year ago when I had to buy a card for a PC, 9600XT was upper midrange
while 9600 was upper low end. Today XT is adequate, plain 9600 will struggle
with new games. Still a solid bump and a notch above GF5200.
But even as of today, this is about as far as you can go without having a fan on the GPU.
(more expensive mobile versions excluded)

"Only after you buy memory, a real mouse, a better keyboard........ "
A different mouse is what? Ten bucks? And what's wrong with the keyboard? My mac keyboard is virtually identical to my peecee keyboard.
You know if apple shipped it with a two button mouse, people would whine that they should have shipped it with a trackball.
"why do they persist in shipping memory-crippled supercomputers in their power rigs and calling them ready to go?? "
Since when do they call them "ready to go"? They don't include a monitor, do they? I still wish they'd offer the option of no memory or hard drive so you could buy cheaper elsewhere.

And the mini does ship with tiger, looks like all macs do. I assume they did that once tiger shipped.

I wonder why Apple dropped the XT on their towers then... doesn't seem right. Using a graphics card that doesn't require a fan does make sense, I suppose, on the iMac.
Now, seeing as how the iMac (as well as iBook and eMac) can be "encouraged" to support dual display as opposed to only mirroring, does anyone know if I could drive a separate 23" LCD at native resolution? My work iMac (1.25GHz G4, 17") is driving a separate 17" CRT at 1152X870 (despite a listed 1024x768 maximum) so I would think/hope that it is possible.....

Yeah, I think they should put dual processors back in that 1.8 GHz G5 PowerMac for the same price. I would buy one today. I'd never buy an iMac though. I always have some type of PCI needs sooner or later which is why the iMac just isn't for everybody. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Look here for some (basic) differences between the graphics card options on the Power Mac.

Good news! I called my local Apple store. It was exactly 14 days since I bought it so they are going to swap a new one for my 2 week old one and rebate me the difference in cost for the bluetooth I paid for. Sweet!

One thing Apple could add to the iMac is a DVI input which allows the iMac to act as a monitor for another computer. This would definitely help address concerns about the limitations of having a desktop computer with an integrated display. Sun already provides external input on their thin clients:

Imagine the possiblities: Buy an iMac G5 and share the display with your PC, or even your Powerbook.

How about extra USB and Firewire ports on the front or the side of the iMac?

Bare minimum is still 256mb as of right now, but you can BTO and the BTO costs seemingly have dropped again. I thought it was $75 a few days ago when I last checked for 512mb, looks like it's in the $50-60 (I believe $59) range.

Shipping with Tiger right now. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I should know, working on placing an order for 2 1.25 Ghz. Mac mini's as we speak. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif It was the only thing that had me holding off on ordering was wanting Tiger with them. The only thing that'd be nice is if they made 512mb standard (would cut the costs of my order) and bumped the Superdrive up to Dual Layer. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Be a nice early b-day present from Apple for me. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

The single-button mouse, of course!
Oh, and the Apple logo is a symbol of Satan and an affront to Christianity. Not to mention that Steve Jobs eats babies, and doesn't even have the table manners to marinade them in Worcestershire sauce first. I heard he also kills puppies.
In reply to:

Why would one buy a PowerMac 1.8 when it can have a 2.0 Imac for the same price ?
You're not supposed to want a PowerMac 1.8. that's the "chump" model they are clearing from the channel. Some people do actually need the extra drive-bays and expandability. So, if you don't need a faster machine, but need expandability, then use that.
Sure, it's a tiny market segment, but that's the way it's supposed to be. Apple would rather you buy an iMac or one of the faster Powermacs. My question for you: why would Apple want to encourage the purchasing of the lowest-end of any product line?
