i have a G4 DP 533. it is reasonably quiet, but my APS Ext firewire drive is very load so i don't boot it all the time.
I was considering a G5 2.5gig, but now the 2.7gigs just came out. i have seen nothing on the newer ones so don't know if it is liquid cooled like the 2.5.
so the question is, how load are th G5s and are the liquid cooled models really quieter? Is the 2.7 model any better than the 2.5 model?

I just bought the G5 2.7 (Actually I won a powerbook at the Tiger release, sold it, and bought the G5... just had to through that in b/c I'm STILL in shock that I won!).
Anyway, the fans on this computer are AMAZINGLY quiet! My dad has the original dual 2Ghz and that thing is WAY louder than mine. Well, more to the point, the fans CAN be loud on the 2.7 when they are running at full-speed, but they very rarely do. Even when I'm taxing the CPU's at 75% or more for a few minutes! I can hear the fans spin up a bit, but they are no where near as loud as my dad's computer.
I'm assuming that the liquid cooling is really doing the job such that the fans don't need to push as much air through the heat sinks. I'm very impressed with the fan/heat management so far!

Basically what GoCats! said. I'd add that it also seems to depend on the model. We have a couple of older dual 1.8GHz machines, and they are generally quieter than my dual 2.5GHz. What I mean is that the fans ramp up and down a lot more on my 2.5GHz than they seem to on the 1.8GHz. My 2.5GHz machine is rarely annoyingly loud though, and on average noticeably quieter than my old dual 1.25GHz G4.

thank you..... just what i was looking for. any idea about performance differences between 2.5 and 2.7?
While supplies last, i can save myself about $300 on the 2.5 and through half of that at a ram upgrade.

Hi
I'm sure in certain "stresses" it is noticeable but [personally] I'd jump on that 2.5 and spend some more on RAM. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
FYI. My fans are only really noticeable, and I have the side panel off, when the environmental (room) temp. gets a bit hotter.

I may be mistaken, but. The Dual 2.7 G5 is liquid cooled and has no fans.

No, you still need the fans to move air over the heat sink.

The dual 2.7 is the same as the 2.5 - the cpu's are liqued cooled, but there are still 9 fans. These are supposedly all independently controlled (I believe the liqued cooled G5's have something like 39 heat sensors, in various places). The loudest fans are the pair mounted in front of the liqued cooling system, they also ramp up and down the most.
As an aside, the heat out the back of my 2.5GHz, when under heavy load, is intense - so that cooling system is dumping a lot of heat out!

Hi
The loudest fans in mine are actually the two rear CPU zone fans. The front CPU zone fan (single processor unit) is normally spinning at a very low RPM.

I just got a 2.5 G5 a month ago, and the only times that the fans become noticeable is either when I'm downloading a new work unit from SETI or I'm playing Doom 3. It can be disturbing during Doom if only because there are a lot of industrial noises used in the game, and when you're concentrating on what's around the next darkened corner, you DON'T want any extraneous noises.
But you know, I'd rather have the minimal fan noise from the coolest computer on the planet than not have it at all.
