Several online sources seem to have several different opinions on the maximum amount of memory my 20" imac G4 can handle. Apple says it can take up to 1 GB, mactracker says "2 GB (Actual) 1 GB (Apple)" , and online memory stores like ramjet.com say it can handle 2 GB. My question is, has anybody successfully installed this much memory into their machine? I just want to be sure that a 1 GB chip will work before I shell out the cash. Thanks.

Hi
There are three reasons why Apple would proclaim a lower maximum memory capacity for a system.
1) Larger modules in those specifications were not available at that time but now are. Apple doesn't update the documentation.
2) Larger modules were no where near cost effective and therefore since Apple didn't off them, they are not considered to be of interest to anyone
3) Apple "factory only" slots are not considered to be upgradeable and therefore they don't consider anything except what they install in there, even though more can technically be added.
Put simply...It will hold 2GB if it is a DDR-SDRAM using iMac G4.

The key is that the 700 and 800 MHz iMac G4s take PC133 SDRAM, not DDR, and THESE models are limited to 1 Gb RAM (2 x 512 Mb) . (one reason being that nobody makes 1 Gb PC133 modules)
The 1 GHz and up models take DDR RAM and can go to 2 Gb
Thanks

Hey,
I have yet to dive into the inerds of my imac. Someday, when I get some money. . .
If you would like the service manual for you computer, you can probably find it here
http://home.earthlin..._s/manuals.html
I've looked at it, and it will take some work. However, it is doable.
Good luck, and let me know how your upgrade works out for you.
