A better comparison will surely be to Nikon's next-generation effort -- compared to the Rebel XT (I've used both, though the D70 mostly for macro photography in a lab setting), the Nikon D70 is not quite a lumbering oaf, but it's safe to say the Rebel XT wins on most counts: resolution, of course, and also speed and general capabilities. However, if you have a pile of Nikon lenses sitting around, I'm sure that the D70's successor will be well worth the wait. I only bought a Rebel XT because I got tired of waiting.
One very obvious functional difference -- the Rebel XT has a CMOS sensor, while the Nikon D70s uses a CCD. That one seems to break slightly in favour of the Nikon model, but my guess would be that CMOS is less prone to wholesale failure (not that either camera should be short-lived).
