I am running ProTools LE on Classic.
I currently have been running an ATA100
drive, but when I get up to a lot of
tracks...I can't really play the song
completely because a window pops up and
says that my disk is too slow.
So I bought an Ultra 160 SCSI drive and
a SCSI card off of ebay; however the
card says it only does 20mb/sec, but
my drive was an expensive fast drive.
Will this new SCSI set-up be faster
than my ATA100 or will I have to
get a faster SCSI card???
Or any other suggestions???
or ways to go!

SCSI vs. ATA

You SCSI drive can run only as fast as its slowest connecting link. In this case it appears to be your card or PM's bus.

ProTools reporting ATA/100 drive is too slow is something to wonder about. Doesn't have to be so.
1. Is drive 7200 rpm/8 MB cache? If nothing else is amiss, my first thought is your ATA/100 drive is ATA/66 5400/2 MB running in ATA/100 drive bay.
2. What is RAM partition allotted to ProTools? MUCH larger partition may compensate for slower drive access speeds.
3. How much swap space is on the hard drive where ProTools' temporary files go? An acceptable rule is to leave 20 percent of drive's space free.
4. Is Virtual Memory ON and running in its default mode?

I've been tolled by many video and audio editing
professionals that they wouldn't use anything but
SCSI RAIDs.
Something to do with how SCSI drives store and access
data. Bus speeds, connection types and spindle speeds
are just secondary concerns. Kind of like how FireWire
400 in real world app tests is still faster than USB 2,
even though USB 2 is "technically" faster on paper.
Don't ask me to explain further, I didn't understand it
that much when it was explained to me by so called experts.

You're referring to asynchronous accessing. This doesn't solve your problem, though. You're using the LE version. Number of tracks is low enough that you need look elsewhere than for SCSI Ultra 160 to solve the errors.
Try as many simple solutions as you can before throwing lots of money at problem. Remember Pro Tools 4, I believe, ran nicely on my Quadra 650. I say again, look at your machine's set-up.
Video editing and professional audio editing is not what you're doing. Software is inadequate for professional use. It can do a creditable job on some jobs, but don't ask it to earn you a living.
