I am experiencing an error type 2 message when trying to open a word document. Furthermore, I am unable to open the word document or launch word.
Tried the microsoft website and the instructions to fix required word to open. I can open Word and get the error type message.
Tried reloading microsoft office and still have the same problem.

I would really appreciate anyone's help on the fix.

Thanks

Please identify computer used, OS version, Word version, Office version if applicable.
Also furnish ALL TEXT of error window. Does window occur in Word, or in Finder?

I assume you have sufficient RAM to run Word, that you have allotted sufficient RAM to Word. I assume you have been maintaining your hard drive regularly, from a different drive. I assume drives with System folder, and Word (if on different drive), have at least 20 percent of disk space free.

Type 2 error is probably not occurring in Word. It is an address error for Finder.

So . . .

1. Disable all start-up files except: CarbonLib; Open Transport; Open Transport ASLM Modules; Shared Library Manage; Shared Library Manager PPC; USB Device Extension; USB Software Locator. I think this will get you to the desktop.

2. Go to: System Folder > Preferences > Microsoft. Delete this Microsoft Preferences folder.

3. Open Word. Word's self repair feature should install everything it needs to run on this stripped system. If it opens, your next step is to adjust your Preferences. Having done this, save a compressed self-extracting archive of preferences. When -- not IF -- they become corrupted in use, you can restore Word to pristine with a few mouse clicks.

4. Quit Word. Type 2 errors in Finder tend to be start-up file conflicts. Your best bet to ferret any conflicts is Conflict Catcher 9.x (depends on your OS version) This is available USED ONLY.

What you want to achieve is to enable start-up files one at a time, restarting for each change. Eventually, you will experience the error. If you're lucky, there is only one start-up file in conflict with others. More likely, though, is you have multiple conflicts that must be identified. Then you disable conflicting files and Word runs without a blip.

I must comment that if you are not thorough and systematic, you will not succeed. I mention this because your response wasn't.

Your read is right with technical know how. I will give it a cautious shot but it sounds like this is not a simple fix for the normal user and almost makes me want to upgrade the software.
How do I confirm RAM requirements for Word?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Guy. Here's my reply:
Recommendation: Buy OS 9 for Dummies. Great book!! Find it at remainders book store?? or on closeout??
Five years after OS X, I'm content with OS 9.2.2. Of course, mine is tricked out. For word processing and most DB, spreadsheet, and page layout PRINT work, single users have little need for OS X. And there are valid reasons for NOT migrating that I won't get into.

If you live where no one is knowledgeable about OS 9, you need to invest time in becoming so. There is not much to acquiring the skills needed except patience, and the ability to think systematically and sequentially -- If this happens, then this happens. Not rocket science, just different from dealing with human beings. Computers are really incredibly stupid slaves. They will do what you tell them to do, but you MUST tell them precisely. Computers don't interpret well.

Your problem, if I diagnosed it correctly, is a routine, easy one to fix. Conflict Catcher 9.x does most of the work for you. Do a search for "used Macintosh software." You just sit there and OPEN and QUIT Word, then restart. Regarding the method I furnished to kludge that first attempt, don't worry about it. The worst you can do is no big deal.
You cannot harm your computer or its software All you are doing is "taking stuff out of your pockets and putting in a drawer." If your pants hang straight, the problem is solved. But you can always put the stuff back in your pockets.

RAM requirements:
[for computer] When in Finder go to Apple menu > About this computer. This tells you: Your Mac OS version; real RAM; is Virtual Memory ON; how computer is using RAM.
[for Word] Single-click on Word's APPLICATION icon. With icon highlighted, Command-I to Get Info. Click-and-hold on General Information. Drop down to Memory. I have 1 GB of RAM in my computer. I have Minimum 22892K (about 20 MB) and Preferred 84332 (about 80 MB). After typing in as high a Preferred size as your machine can handle comfortably, close the window. That's it. I recommend no less than 25 MB RAM in Preferred. Word deals with out-of-memory issues by crashing without warning and without saving. If you save (not Fast Save) often, Word will need that RAM because it is maintaining large numbers of temporary files that allow you to undo work.
Microsoft has not written a printed Word Manual in many years. Every version of Word beginning with Word 6 (through at least Word 2001) is nearly identical. Differences among the versions are minor improvements and bells & whistles. I own that last manual. If you can find a copy, life becomes easy.
User's Guide, Microsoft Word Version 6.0, Document # WB60460-0794 (862 pages)
I have not seen any third-party book close to this in terms of information and clarity. Integrated help files are nowhere as thorough and clear. To learn to make Word sing, without a manual of this kind, must be sheerest hell.
