I've got a 17' 1 Gig Powerbook running OS 10.4 and iTunes 4.8
All of a sudden, some of my CD's wont even load! Like, I popped in an REM CD to rip to put on my iPod, and the computer read it for about 15 seconds and then spit it out! What's going on? I know the drive is more sensitive than a normal one on a stereo or what not, but my car stereo, my home system and my roommated PC all load the disc without any problems.
And on the next disc I tried to rip, it stopped ripping on track 4, and just kept buzzing, and buzzing and buzzing. I finally force quit and ejected my CD.
Anyone have any ideas on this one? Maybe a faulty drive?

Up totally won't work! And Reveal kills itself about 1/3 of the way through on "She Just Wants to Be".
Discs are mad clean. I used a new cloth to wipe em off and everything. And they work in two stereos, my car and my roommates PC. Hoping its the drive, as I can't think of anything else. I know there are "lens cleaner" CD's for stereos. Would one of those work on my computer? And why in the world does Apple make these things sensitive? Wouldn't it be good to have a drive that can take some abuse? Maybe mine works and it's just super picky on the CD's. But its still unacceptable. I tried a Green Day CD (Nimrod) and King for a Day was just static for half the song!
My computer is still under Apple Care, and I'm getting ready to go on vacation. Sounds like a good time to get this fixed...

So it does sound like a hardware issue?

So I get it back, and the say no problems. This is really steaming me. Should I grab a Disc Doctor or something like that? But I mean, I figured if it worked in a $100 stereo, it should work in a $3000 computer...
Apple told me that if indeed the disc was clean, it could be a compatibility problem. No joke. They said that. That a CD that works in everything BUT my PowerBook may just not be able to. Sound to me like Apple is importing tech support folks from Dell...

I have this problem with my Powerbook 17" and with an iBook 15". They won't read my Red Hot Chilli Peppers CD, but it will read everything else. So I doubt it is the drive, but as to why this happens I don't know.
If you can figure it out let me know, but you're not the only one with this problem.

An update:
After 8 calls to Apple (I wish I could stick my Verizon bill on them, sheesh) they finally agreed to replace the drive. So they send me the box.
Two problems.
1. On my "Estimated Costs" sheet, they describe this as #308-Drive Will Not Mount. Does that have anything whatsoever to a bad "super"drive?
2. And this is the one that REALLY gets me. Apple needed my username and password in order in install the new drive. No sweat I figured, I can trust them. WRONG. Somehow, they have gotten into my machine. I can no longer check the serial number of my burner. Luckily for me, I had it written down on a piece of paper, so they can do whatever they want to my computer.
Maybe I should just get them to put a combo-drive in (more reliable?), bite the bullet, and buy an external DVD burner. I shouldn't have to though, and thats the point. The computer, which is still under warranty does not work, and its Apple's responsibility to fix this.
I'm gonna call Apple for the last time tomorrow. And I do mean last time. This issue is either going to get resolved, or I'm switching back to PC. I'll take a crash a day as long as I can freaking use CD's and DVD's like my 6 year old Gateway does...
