I have LaCie hard drive connected to my iBook through its single FireWire port, and I then connect my camcorder to the hard drive (daisy chain). This setup works fine: iMovie imports the footage with no problems, saving it on the laptop's internal hard drive.
My first question: if I save an iMovie project on the external drive, will this work too? The data would then go from the camcorder, through the external drive, into my iBook, and then back out to the external drive. Can FireWire handle this two-way traffic?
My second question is this. If I buy an external DVD burner (my iBook just has a combo drive), then daisy-chain that to the external drive, and then daisy-chain the camcorder to the burner, will the same setup still work? Could I, say, burn a project stored on the external drive onto DVD, all flowing through the same single FireWire port on my iBook?
(I know that there are issues with iMovie not burning to non-built-in burners, but I think there are ways around that, and I want to know if the configuration is feasible at all before making the purchase.)
Thanks all!

Yes it can. I have a powerbook 12" 1GHz, FW400, a 250GB LaCie external hard disk, an external LaCie DVD burner, and a 3G 20GB iPod. The combination works fine in a daisy chain of powerbook->hard disk->dvd-rw->iPod. When I import video off my canon camcorder, I usually unplug the iPod and plug in the camera, at the end of the chain. I've never experienced any glitches.

Great, thanks nra1871!
Now all I need to do is find a really short FireWire cable to link to hard disk to the DVD burner...
I am also looking at a LaCie burner, in the same design style as my hard disk. I have the disk upright now, but I may be stacking them when I have both; can you actually physically link then together in some way, or is this not wise?
