I play a lot of online poker, usually on my 700mhz G3 icebook. Because most poker sites are winbloze only, I use a Mac-friendly site where the poker software is java based. I typically play 4 tables at a time, and it's a challenge due to lag which results in delayed view of the cards, "ghost" cards from previous hands, delayed bets, etc. Up to now I had assumed that most of the problem was due to the online connection speed, but, no, read on.....
I'm typing this on my brand new G5 iMac. I played poker on it last night via the same java client and via my same at home DSL connection and - wow! - everything happens with absolute speed and clarity. No more ghost cards, no more wondering what my second hole card is because it hasn't appeared yet, etc. So....I must conclude that my poor performance problems on the icebook are due to processor speed (g3 at 700mhz) and/or the OS (10.2.8).
So....all this finally gets me to my question: What would be the best OS to put on my G3 700mhz iBook with 384mb ram to opitimize the running of the java poker game? It has 10.2.8 on it right now.
Any opinions as to whether Panther or Tiger would be better? I would think Tiger just because it's the newest, but some have expressed reservations about Tiger on a G3. On the other hand, maybe Tiger has better Java.........?
Any help appreciated.

I'd have to chock that up to different versions of the OS (and more in particular, the version of the JVM). If you have no issue with the cost of Tiger, I'd put that on the iBook. It should be able to handle it just fine.

Thanks for the reply.
I hate to spend the $$ for Tiger without knowing for sure if it will increase the java performance.
Anyone out there have a 600mhz G3 that can compare java performance with Jaguar versus Tiger?

Yes, Java is more advanced on Panther and Tiger than on Jaguar.
Also, the promised Java 1.5 will "probably" only be available on Tiger, as the Java 1.5 SDK is Tiger-only.
Jaguar has Java froze at Java 1.4.1 Update 1 for Mac OS X.
Panther is at Java 1.4.2 Update 2.
