A couple days ago I was using the program Onyx to clean up my system folder and such, verifying and repairing permissions, when the program crashed. I restarted the computer, the apple logo came up, the spinning dial below it, and then it went to a black screen with a message in white font:
Jun 3 13:40:37 init: can't exec /bin/sh for single user: Exec format error
Jun 3 13:41:07 init: can't exec /bin/sh for /etc/rc: Exec format error
I have never encountered this before. So the next thing I do is boot from the Software Install CD 1. But it takes me straight to open-firmware. So I "mac-boot" and it comes to the folder with the question mark. I tried booting from the TechTools cd that comes with the AppleCare package, and the TechTools CD won't boot, it just freezes at the Apple logo. I tried booting from DiskWarrior and Norton Utilities also, which was a no go. Zapping the PRAM and NVRAM with both the key-combos and in open-firmware did nothing. I tried booting the computer up in SUM (Single User Mode) to run fsck, but when I try that it comes to the same error message as mentioned above. I've tried pretty much every key-combo and have tried troubleshooting from the macrumor forums and the apple website. Is there anyone out there who knows what this error message means? I'd like to troubleshoot this problem without having to make a trip to the Apple Store or to the local mac dealer if that's at all possible.
