Mail Auto-fill problem

I'm having trouble with Mail's auto-fill feature. When I start to enter a To: name from my Address Book it auto-fills with an older (and deleted) e-mail address. (The older address starts with a letter nearer the front of the alphabet.) I'm having a similar problem with a Group entry. It auto-fills with an older version (and deleted) group list.
How can I eliminate this problem? It is causing me to have to verify each address which considerably slows down my e-mail processing. Running 10.2.8
