I am running OS X 10.2.8 on an 700 MHz PowerPC eMac. I want to burn DVDs of our home videos. As you all might know, this eMac did not come with a superdrive. I've digitized the video to iMovie 3.0.3 and I've purchased the iomega Super DVD Writer Dual-Format USB 2.0 Drive because it states that it's compatible with OS X 10.2.7 or higher for single-layer burning. The software that came with it is Discribe.
Now, my problem is I can't record to the drive. In iMovie, I've created the chapters and when i click on iDVD Project, I get a pop-up window that says, "Compatible version of iDVD required. This feature requires iDVD version 3.0 or later." The current iLife has iDVD 5 but it looks like I'd have to upgrade my OS to 10.3.4. So is there anyway to avoid the high cost of upgrading everything? Is there anyway that I can get the DVD drive to burn our family videos? Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Prior to iDVD 5, you needed a "hack" to burn from iDVD onto an external FW DVD burner. I'm not sure if the hack was for iDVD 3 or iDVD 4. I also forget what the hack was called, but if you do a search and use terms such as "iDVD, external burner, easter egg", you might get some hits.

Yeah, I downloaded a "hack" from patchburn 1.1 for OS X 10.2.x from patchburn.com. Everything seems like it went well. I choose the appropriate dvd drive and I still get a pop-up window about needing iDVD 3 or later. Do you or anyone else have other suggestions?

ok, I misread you. I thought you already had iDVD3 and was looking for the hack to enable external DVD burning.
I don't know for sure, but I think your best bet would be to track down a copy of iDVD3 or iDVD4. Pretty sure both will work with Jag and the hack. eBay will have copies you can buy. Make sure you don't pay anything over $50. That's how much the original iLife and iLife04 cost.
