HP LaserJet 1020 for Mac?

I'm considering getting a new laser and I've looked at the HP LaserJet 1020 (great size and good price). However, when looking around (on HP's site as well as general internet searches) it doesn't seem to support Mac. There are OSX drivers to download from HP for other models, but not that one.
My questions is: since it's a USB printer, and since it's an HP printer, will it work to plug and play it on my Mac without the correct driver? Does anyone know or even better - has someone tried the 1020 on a Mac?

Don't even think about buying a LaserJet 1020 for use with a Mac. HP does not provide OS X drivers for it. It most certainly will not work "plug and play on your Mac without the correct driver". I note it sells for around $180.
Instead, take a look at the LaserJet 1022. It is fully supported for use with Macs. It is even sold by the Apple online store. It sells for $199.

Your mileage may vary... In fact, I haven't taken it for a complete test drive yet...
But I downloaded and installed the 1022 driver this afternoon. At least twice in the install process it said it was for the 1020 series. And it successfully recognized the 1020 in the device scan, and then I printed a plain text page and a decent sized photo. Who knows what I may run into down the road though...

I can definitely confirm that there is an HP driver for the 1020. Hp doesn't include it in the box and it's not on HP's website under Support and Drivers if you choose the 1020. HOWEVER if you choose the 1022 printer you'll see Mac drivers listed. On brand new machines with Tiger we have used the installer found under the 1022 listing on HP's website and it says (twice) while you're installing the driver that it is the 1020 SERIES driver. We then tell the Mac to detect printers and it correctly finds the 1020 connected to the USB port. Printing from standard office apps and also from a proprietary curriculum application has shown no anomolies thus far.
Again ... if this was a kludge I would have expected to see a 1022 in the available printers list. Instead I saw the 1020, properly identified, ON the USB and it printed correctly.
I'm inclined to believe HP simply dropped the ball on this one.

Heres a recap for everyone to Install HP LaserJet 1020 on Mac OSX.
1) Download; http://www.narc.ca/1601-LJ[u]1022Series_OSX.dmg (Old version)
2) If you have anything for the HP 1020 in "/Library/Reciepts" delete it.
3) Delete anything for the HP 1020 in Printer in "Printer Setup Utility"
4) Add new printer in "Printer Setup Utility", select HP LaserJet 1020, driver should come up, click ADD
Then you should be able to print.. glad we finally got around this one.. and one big FU to HP.

I have tried following instructions by downloading the 1022 driver, but after installing the driver I am hitting a wall with the process of ADDING the printer.
I go to printer utilities...and my intel macbook detects the USB hp laserjet 1020 printer...but it is NOT finding the driver. Any advice? please email me at skinnymatrix888 AT YAHOO DOT COM

I have just bought a near new HP Laserjet 1022N printer for a small office with 3 macs.
Rather than going through the drama of shared USB printing where my 15" MBP can crash due to different driver versions on Intel/non-Intel machines, I bought an ethernet networked printer to hopefully solve the problem.
However despite citing support for OSX on the HP site I cannot complete the Add Printer setup.
I have downloaded and installed the HP LaserJet 1022 Series OS X Universal Binary Full Solution V1.2.0 from http://h10025.www1.h...w...323&lang=en
- but none of the Macs can complete the Add Printer setup. The 1022N printer is visible in the main window and the drivers load into the right box but clicking on the Add Printer button brings on the spinning beach ball for all machines.
The same site offers V3 of the software as a cd mailer but when I rang them they told me that version of the software was not available yet for the Asia Pacific region - I'm in Sydney Australia. And they don't know when/if it will be available
If any of you have the V3 software you can send me that would be greatly appreciated - or perhaps someone has a workaround?
Alternatively can anyone recommend a cheap networked black and white laser for OSX?
thanks

My experience with HP printer is very bad. Personnally, I won't ever buy any other Hp one. The support is very bad, and their drivers are flacky, are very long to be updated and are often dropped when the printer is still working perfectly. However, I don't have any other to suggest since I managed to convince my LJ3030 to work after a year of fight and cursing (but classic printing is still unsupported). My brother has an Brother laser MFP (punt unintended), but it's connected via usb. I don't know how their networked one is working however. Good luck and keep us informed, I would like some suggestions for my next printer.

Hi! Thanks for the Great instructions. I was not hired for my computer expertise, usually just call my Mac guy, but i did get it installed. Problem is i can print some things but not others. It was ordered from our head office in a different city. I have an eMac with OSX 10.3.9 as well as OX 9 running at the same time as i have a lot of old files. Should i tell them to have this one picked up and get a 1022 delivered? I might be changing machines as this one is old and slow, if they will spring for it. Thanks in advance!!!
Take Care,
Randy

Does any of these small footprint HP laser printers have an OS 9 printer driver available? I believe the HP 1012 does.
In the universe of small footprint laser printers, the other OS 9-compatible machines I can identify are: Brother HL 2040 (and OS X); Lexmark Optra E310/312 (OS X??); and Samsung ML-2571N (and OS X). The HP 1020 is smaller than these.
