I'm sure this has come up before and I'm sorry for reposting this topic (if indeed I am) but I just can't get my 15GB 2nd Gen? ipod to mount I've got an emac with OSX 10.2.8 and one day for no reason it just decided to stop showing up in itunes and mounting
I just downloaded itunes 4.9 and that made no difference then I thought bout reinstalling itunes 4 from the disc that came with my ipod but it won't let me if there is a newer version installed so then I tried to delete itunes 4.9 but it won't let me saying "The operation cannot be completed because the item 'iTunesHelper' is in use."
If any one has had a similar problem I would really appreciate any help I got all this new music and no way to get it on my ipod
thanx

Did you download the latest ipod updater and try to update or restore your iPod?
Repair Disk Permissions?

Are you using a Firewire port or a USB port?
I hear tell that sometimes the firewire port needs resetting. To do that they say to completely shutdown the machine and unplug the firewire connector ... even remove the AC plug and let it sit for a while and then plug the AC back in and start... then plug the ipod in ... Just a shot in the dark ... (have you confirmed that your Firewire port is working in the about this apple and then hit the more info and perused the system info especially the Firewire stuff?

You might also try unplugging any other firewire devices (ie. iSight) from the computer. I had a problem that when both the iPod and iSight were connected at the same time (into separate firewire ports) it greatly slowed down & then froze the transfer to the iPod. On the Apple discussion boards they suggested unplugging the iSight, and it now works fine. Apparently there is a brandwidth problem with having 2 firewire devices mounted at the same time.

My iPod mini has given problems on and off mounting with a firewire connection, but it worked prettty consistently with a usb connection. I've downloaded 4.9 and now, when I connect the iPod (either way) I get the splash screen informing me that there's new software for my iPod and asking if I want to update it. If I click "Yes" I get an "unknown error" message, the updater quits, and the iPod doesn't show up in iTunes. If I click "No, don't update the software," the iPod mounts to iTunes but only if connected by a usb port. Weirdly, the iPod is always visible on the desktop, just doesn't show up in iTunes. So I can't seem to update the iPod to 4.9 and the mounting to iTunes problem remains. My nearest apple store is 2 hours away, so I keep hoping it will fix itself (like, maybe, with the new software), but it seems to be getting worse.
I haven't repaired permissions lately (but have since the problem first appeared). I'll try that but don't hold out much hope.

I'm using a firewire connection and I have no other device's connected via firwire. I've unplugged everything and left it for a couple days and tried plugging it back in straight to the ipod having previously used my dock and I still get diddly squat other then it being charged. I'm gonna head into my local Mac store and see if they can help at all.
