From an article in the New York Times:
In reply to:

As Errol Rose made preparations on Monday to bury his 15-year-old son, Christopher, who was killed last week in Brooklyn during a fight over an iPod, he received a telephone call from a stranger. The man spoke in tones that the grieving father said had momentarily quieted his anguish.
The stranger, Mr. Rose soon learned, was Steve Jobs, chief executive of Apple Computer, the company that makes the iPod.

God, what the fk is up with kids if they kill each other over crap like iPods, cellphones, sneakers or jackets.
I have seen suggestions in quite a few places one should either use other headphones or spraypaint your iPod headphones and wires black to keep from being a target.
Kudos to Steve Jobs. Maybe he could earmark the next few months of iPod profits to start up a scholarship in this kid's memory.

I agree Sosumi, it's unreal what kids will do nowadays for meaningless crap. I tell both my 15 and 16 year olds that should they ever find themselves in such a horrific situation, just say "here you go, it's yours". I can't imagine the grief that poor family must feel over something so senseless. I too tip my hat to Mr. Jobs for his kind gesture.
I commute to my workplace by bike through a rather seedy section of a downtown neighbourhood. I have had times in the past when teens have made comments that I felt uncomfortable with (i.e. "nice bike..how much did ya pay for that?")
I make a point of not wearing my iPod in the mornings, very early before there is much activity on the streets. In the afternoon, I wear an old pair of black headphones, sort of the standard airplane issue variety. They're not as noticable as the ipod earbuds, and they allow me to better hear the surrounding noise.
