"1800 dead for no reason".
In my book, that comment is harsh. I have a brother over there (in the rank and file) and (once again, in my book) there is a reason for him being there regardless if you agree with it or not.
As far as supply vs. demand....Peter, I am with you. It's been my history that they don't plan. However, it could be part of the hype. Either way, as I know you will agree, its always worth the wait.

So, again, enlighten me: What's so "big-deal" that now Apple offers a two-button mouse?
It signifies a change in thinking at Apple. For over 20 years, Apple has made a name for the Mac by making it the computer with a one-button mouse. Even as the rest of the industry continued to use two buttons, then three, now three with one that is a scroll wheel, Apple stuck to its guns with the single button mouse. Despite criticism by even the largest of Mac pundits, Apple never offered a multi-button mouse of their own, nor did they offer an option of replacing the single button mouse with an alternative. The one-button was a deliberate move by to create a unique identity that woud immediately reveal the computer as a Mac. The same could be said for Apple's use of white headphones on an iPod. Brand recognition is the name of the game. So, again, enlighten me: What's so "big-deal" that now Apple offers a two-button mouse?
Combine this with the move to Intel, and it adds up to a very large change in thinking at Apple. The mouse itself, while it has some neat features, isn't really the big deal. It's the complete paradigm shift.

MacWorld didn't seem to give the new mouse a rave review. I spoke with my brother in DE and he went to the King of Prussia Mall Apple store to pick up one of the new mice. Well, as we all know, they were sold out. He talked to one of the guys in the store and, from his take, the store guy wasn't all that impressed with the mouse. He even indicated that my brother should wait because there is speculation that a blue tooth version will be released in about 30 days. On hearing that, I canceled my Apple On-Line Store Order.
This time, I think I will wait before I buy.

Derik,
I can clean up this whole thread. No Politics, No bad Apple, No Mighty Mouse.
Voice Recognition/commands and remove the mouse forever. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Heck, I'm still sitting here telling my computer to scroll up to the left then turn off. It wont do it so I'll just use my standard out of the box single action mouse.
Peter /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Every time I look in the mirror I get a laugh.

that wasn't harsh.
I cannot imagine Apple not knowing the response they were going to get when they finally introduced a multi button mouse.
at least you are getting yours the 9th.. mine is scheduled for the 10th.
yes, they failed miserably in the regard of inventory versus demand on release day.
most of the products are built as they are ordered and shipped in a timely manner..
I agree, to tease us and not have the inventory was wrong.

You'll be fine Mark. So will Peter. Time to break out the RubiX Cube perhaps?

I believe, you can. Using the included software, make both sides the Primary Button. Apple designed it to be very much one-button capable for those that have zero interest in multi-buttons. Mainly those that the one-button design was targeted at, the computer-illeterate.

You hold Control while clicking to get the second button effect.

It sounds none to you. I could use it both ways but lean towards two-button & scroll. Others would never touch a one-button. All preference...As usual.

I agree on the comment that it is difference in 'sight'. However, again [I believe] the US is sticking its thumb up the a*s of someone it shouldn't. Well, I'm sure there are devious background reasons that are [obviously] not publicly stated but overall pointless death as usual. Go Bush!
Derik...That's what scares me. This seems to be too many huge changes at once. I do enjoy the Mighty Mouse idea but this Intel thing is still quite a bitter taste for me.

Just received the Mighty Mouse and after an hour long test drive , I'm not overly thrilled.
Part of this 'let down' is most likely caused by my previous usage of a 'scroll wheel' Logitech (optical) which I acquired for ca. $20.00. Since I also had 'USB Overdrive', assigning functions which I find useful was no problem. The Logitech had me spoiled, I guess.
The Mighty Mouse is NOT an ergonomical device, IMHO, definitely not! The lack of the middle 'hump' may contribute to the strain of the wrist: Carpal tunnel, here you come!
I felt a definite wrist strain while using the MM. I DO NOT develop those problems while using the Logitech because it is shaped and held differently. If the user's hand does not rest over the exact spots on the MM, clicking comes to a screeching halt. More than once I had to move my hand to find the 'sensitive' spots.
The shiny, acryllic finish on the MM plus sweaty hands? Man.....I just don't know. Right away the MM felt sticky. The Logitech has a roughened surface which seems much better suited.
And then there is the price: who sets the prices of those Apple products? $49.00 for this mouse? Please!! Does anyone at Apple check the products and prices of the competition?
Just my two cents...

I am fine now.
heh
it came in today.
tossed the logitech 2 button scrolly optical on the shelf.
was surprise at how long the reboot after MM software was installed took.
and you have to set it.. default is one button.
the absence of the hump is nice, might take a bit of time.. but it's comfy. I have long fingers and tend to rest my hand so the rear of the mouse is at the base of my index and middle fingers.
the only other surprise was the box apple shipped it in.. my 12" powerbook came in the same size box.

that's the software configuration out of the box.
you have to change prefs to get the right click.
the side buttons and the scroll ball are software controlled and you can them off.
they are on when you first set it up.
so yes, you can use it as a one button mouse easily and comfortably with the ball for scrolling.
i like it more than the logitech.

BUT...dmod had previously said: "I bought a LogiTech Trackman Wheel to use with my mini...", and it was "plug 'n play". Obviously, I don't have the software that is "included" with the Mighty Mouse.
I would certainly try the Apple software to attempt to modify the Logitech "menu" IF someone will share their Mighty Mouse software, or if this can be accomplished some other relatively simple way. This "computer-illeterate" (sic) appreciates any and all help! :<)
