HI
launch iPhoto
FILE >> Add to Library ( <command>o )
path to the folder with your pics.. select the folder and click on Import
or move them into your iPhoto pics folder and then you can do each one individually.

Hmmm....When I bought a new computer (old iMac to newer iMac) I transferred my photos to the new machine. The new machine had iPhoto and I bought a new camera and started using iPhoto. The old camera pics I just transferred, en masse, to the new computer and I labeled them 'Old Pictures'. I keep them in my Home file. When I open one of the files to view them, Preview opens and that's what I use.
Just now, I opened the Old Pictures file and selected one of the folders and dragged it to the desktop. Then, I opened iPhoto and dragged the folder onto iPhoto. It immediately imported the pictures into my main library. You should be able to do the same thing. How are your photos grouped? Do you have multiple folders or are they all in one? Do you have labels on each photo or group of photos? Bob.
