My mom has a Dell PC, running Windows XP.
She has DSL service. We bought a Linksys Wireless - G Broadband Router from Sprint, her provider. Following their directions, we attached and configured it to her computer.
I have an eMac G4 running OS 10.3, on the other side of the house. We are trying to hook it into my Mom's DSL service.
Sprint told us the next step would be to find a wireless adapter that would work on my Mac. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

All you need is an Apple AirPort Extreme card. Plug that in and you're ready to go. It will work with the Linksys. Many Mac users use AirPort with Linksys. I have.

While the Airport Extreme card is an easy option, it's not the easiest on a budget. Since the eMac is likely to stay in it's place, you could purchase a wireless ethernet bridge instead of the AE card. Linksys makes a 11g bridge that requires no drivers for Mac OS X.
I think the model number WET54g or something like that. Make sure you get the 802.11g version as Linksys also makes a 11b version.

Thanks! I'll look into that (even though I don't understand it right now)
I'm really into "easy", but I'm also into "budget". /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Wow! Sounds like it's workable - even for me.
I'm really grateful for the "been there, done that" input - that makes a difference. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Thanks!!!

Great! Thanks for the useful advice! And the encouragement!
You're right, the installation doesn't look that bad.
Now, does anyone know the least expensive place to get an Airport Extreme card? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Perhaps not the cheapest, but certainly one of the fairest (& more reputable) would be to buy a refurbished Airport Card from Apple, $69.00 refurb. as opposed to $99.00 new; free shipping & a full warranty to boot.

Ott Phenote is onto something here. You need to figure out which Airport card your eMac takes. Post some specs about the eMac and we can help figure out if your eMac takes the Airport or Airport Extreme card. If it only takes the Airport (11b) card, I would definately go with the wireless bridge option. If it can take the Extreme card, then you have to weigh between easy and inexpensive.

If it's a 100Mhz bus it's a regular Airport card, if it's 133Mhz bus it's the Airport Extreme card.

Now wait justa second. "$99 new" ?!? The AirPort Extreme card has been $79 new for a while now, and many wireless bridges seem to cost around that. Meaning there is almost no savings from using something other than the AirPort Extreme card, even new. Might as well stick with the recommended Apple equipment.
ftaok called it. Either get an Extreme card or if the eMac is an old one and the old AirPort card can't be found, then get a wireless bridge.

Airport Extreme card it is, then
In my system profiler, it says "bus speed 133Mhz"
Thanks! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, I wondered about that too. Saw the Airport Express card at Apple site for $79, free shipping.
They also offer a refurb for $69, but I wonder if it's worth the little amount of money you are saving.
My Mac is a 1GHz G4 EMac, bought in 2003.
I hope that does not make it "old"
So does that mean I use the Airport Extreme card, and forget about that bridge-something-or-another?
Thanks!

I hate to ask, but what in the world is "a wireless ethernet bridge"?
I don't even know what ethernet means.
I'm no Mac Genius, and I don't understand techno stuff, so if it's in the least difficult to explain, don't bother to try with this hopeless case (me). All I care about is something that is easy and works, no matter what it's called.
It looks like the general consensus is pointing to the AirPort Extreme card.
This bridge thing, is it sufficiently cheaper to justify the added difficulty? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
