Ok, so I'm digging Spotlight, but very often what will happen is that in searching for a certain Quark file or job, I'll start typing in the job code in the search bar- it will turn up all the matching jobs, but it will also turn up EVERY single one of the 'QC collect' text files that were sent out to the vendor as part of the package.
Undoubtedly, these have all the information about each job, so Spotlight is picking out the name of the Quark file and spitting it back at me in my search...
Is there something I can do to exclude these text files when I'm searching?

Do the files you want to omit have a distinctive file type or suffix ? Could they be given one?
Control files such as /System/Library/Spotlight/RichText.mdimporter/Contents/Info.plist determine what file types Spotlight indexes, and the suffix or (OS9) type determine Spotlight type.
See, e.g, this hint and this hint from MacOSXHints.
