I see a cell phone too. I envision it as being a flip phone rather than having one big screen. The lower screen would be a touchscreen, while the upper would not - similar to how the Nintendo DS works, although the form factor would be vertical, as in a cell phone, rather than horizontal, as in a game player. The lower screen could then be a scroll wheel, phone keypad (or even old-fashioned dialer), or what have you.
It would have to sync with Address Book and iCal via iSync. Other PDA functions would remain to be seen, but if it didn't take advantage of Inkwell, that would be a surprise on an Apple PDA phone/pod, wouldn't it?

In reply to:

The new iPod replaces the touch-sensitive scroll wheel and separate screen with a larger touch-sensitive screen with virtual scroll wheel, thus allowing for a larger screen for video/photo playback while retaining the size of the existing full-size iPods.

Something like this occured to me a while back and at the time I thought it was a brilliant solution, but while reading your post, I became aware of a trajic flaw in that plan: fingers are greasy and dirty. If you think about how often you or others touch your monitor, it happens regularly but not constantly. Yet my monitor is almost always filthy-looking when I watch movies, since there's more black in movies than in typical computer use. Now, imagine the grease and smudges you'd get if you scrolled on your monitor all the time in everyday use. Clicking on it. Nasty. Unless there's some magical surface that resists the visual effects of skin oils, it's yet another brilliant idea killed by our flesh-bag constitution!

I think this smells of hardware + software type of annoucement.
I am thinking iTunes 5, with video service AND subscription as an option for those who prefer that.
On the hardware side of things, replacing hard drives in the mini with solid state memory, video iPod and iTunes cell phone officially launched.
Something for everyone and a great way to continue their dominance of the entire marketplace, especially before the Holiday season.

Nice reference to STTNG Episode 17.
Personally, I think that several things will happen on the 7th.
1. vPod - and software update for 4G Color/Photo iPods to support video (using H.264)
2. Flash-based iPod mini (with color screen)
3. Radically New version (or features) of iTunes - specifically video related

But, like anyone else... I'm just guessing. Whatever Apple announces, I'm sure there'll be plenty of WOW involved and the world of personal electronic devices and technology will never be the same.

If IBM could, they would. What business model waits for competition before releasing their next product? Except Microsoft, of course, but they do not have a standard business model.

Apple has reached a deal with Cingular Wireless to finally offer a Motorola phone that will offer users the ability to download and play songs from the iTunes Music.

It's possible I am wrong about the line-out via USB. I believe there is an FM transmitter that connects to the shuffles USB connector, but in fact this could be reading the songs from the iPod like a drive and playing them itself. I don't know if that's how it works, but it could work that way. However, it is still entirely possible to do even better than line-out just with a USB connector. If it supports USB audio, you could plug in a USB Audio box (such as an iMic or the one I have which is another brand I can't remember the name of offhand which has both RCA jack outputs and digital audio out). And you could even use the USB audio connection for high quality audio in (high quality recording - iMic or better). Etc, etc. It wouldn't be as simple or cheap as a cable, but it isn't outrageously expensive. Devices custom for the iPod could be made. A simple USB connection, with appropriate software on the iPod, could do even more than the dock connector can now.
