Word complete by hitting esc

I saw a tip in Macworld Magazine that when you are using some native apps like TextEdit, Mail, Stickies and you're typing away and then hit the first few letters of a word and then hit the esc key it posts a bunch of words to choose from. It works for TextEdit but not for Mail.app... Why not?

works in my mail (thanks for the tip as I have frankly forgotten this)
Any strange settings in Prefs, Composing (in Mail)?

This doesn't work in Pages 1.0.2 to my knowledge. Anyone know why?

Hey it seems to work for mail.app now!
