Okay, I'm going to make the plunge, but I don't know if I'm going all the way in.
While the 20GB color model is tempting, I've seen offers for the 20 GB monochrome ones for about $75 less. Other than the lack of color and the lack of available cable to connect to a camera, are there any other considerations? Are the older iPods somehow lesser quality than the newer ones?
And, along those same lines, if I'm not worried about color, why not get a 6 GB mini for about the same price as a 4 GB nano? Are there other features I'm missing?

Thanks.

I have an older ipod with a monochrome screen. It's fine. Apple are moving away from this type of screen though, so over the next little while the price of these models may drop even further.
The thing I like about having the 20 GB model as opposed to a mini or nano, is the ability to use it as an stand alone external HD and carry around larger files.

What do you mean the iPod mini can't be used as a stand alone external HD? I have used mine in this way to transfer files between my G5 and my work PC. The thing that has annoyed me is that I discovered that I cannot use the mini as a bootable HD. One thing I would like to confirm is that the standard iPod can be used as a bootable HD.

Yes sorry about the confusion. What I meant is that I need the 20GB to carry around larger files (than 6GB).

The monochrome iPods are fine, but if you buy it from someone it means you are most likely letting them get a brand new iPod for $75. And the used monchrome will probably be around 6 months old already (roughly) which means it has less Apple Care remaining on it. Also, you wouldn't have the "newest" thing on the market either, which detracts from the cool factor. Not really that big, but fun. The color iPods show album art which is a fun feature again not really neccessary. And the nano can hold lyrics (I wish they would add that to the regular iPods because I would enjoy it). I would try to get the monochrome one for cheaper if I could if the old factor doesn't bother you. But remeber to get the latest generation monochrome iPod too. The one with a click wheel. Cheers!

Dude if you can afford, get an iPod nano AND a 20GIG. Let yourself go, you won't regret it.
