I have a 4G 20gb iPod that I can NOT turn off. I hold and hold and hold the Play Pause button and it refuses to turn off. It also refuses to go to sleep. the display is always on, draining the battery.
I have Reset the iPod and that has not help. When I reset it the screen never goes blank, the Apple Icon comes up immediately. I thought it was supposed to go blank when resetting it.

Chris,
About 5 minutes after I posted my email to you, I found this on the apple help site:
You need to put the iPod in to disk mode: http://docs.info.app...ml?artnum=93651

Then follow these instructions:
http://docs.info.app...ml?artnum=61584
Good luck
dan

It helped me.

did it help you? because that addresses a problem if your iPod doesn't turn ON. My problem is that I can't get it to turn OFF. which is your iPod problem???

you're right. but basically, I put my iPod into disk mode, then resetting it, which erases everything.
Then, I just re-sync it.
Let me know if this doesn't do it, and I'll be more specific.

a seemlingly savvy clerk at the Apple Store did that and it didn't work. suppose I coud try it again. it did help. before he did it, I couldn't turn it off at all. after he did it, I can atleast turn it off if it is plugged into a power source.

Chris, I have had this occur from time-to-time also. Do any of the controls work when this happens? In my case it seems like the iPod sometimes thinks the HOLD switch is active. In the two or three instances where I have had this occur I have just switched the HOLD switch on then off and then turned off the iPod. I have no idea what causes the problem, but to date this remedy has worked for me.
