I tried downloading Panther update combo from apple and after several hours I would look at the progress and the download window would indicate timed out and my dialup internet connection is disconnected. I already unchecked the disconnect if idle checkbox, no screensaver and no sleep on my computer yet it would still disconnect. What else do I need to to?

-Hi,
By chance to you have AOL? They consider downloading inactive, and they'll disconnect you. Some friends w/ the same snag usually will go to a local Mac store, with a CD, and they'll burn it for them. Just a thought.

In my experience, dial-up just does that.

tjlean,
... exactly what Doug said.
I used dialup before Doug and Macnuke made me get DSL. I'm happy about. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Before that I would go to an Apple Store (with my own disc) and their happy to download and burn updates for you.
If you have a friend with a high speed connection and they use Windows you can still open up the Apple (firefox prefered) site download and burn.
I think I'm paying about $17 per month with tax for DSL (dslextreme).
Besides, at the Apple store you get to ask questions and play with all the new stuff.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately the only Mac store we have here is Compusa and last I heard they don't have internet connection in their service department because of fear of viruses. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

-TJ,
Yeah, its sad, but large dl's are difficult at times using dialup. -Peter jumped on broadband when he found it actually saved him money due to the time waiting for webpages to load during working hours /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif But another thought: If you have a school nearby, or a library you just might get lucky, and be able to burn from there. The JC by me allows it, and I'm gussing about the library. But maybe..

iGetter is the best way to do long downloads when on dial up.
It allows you to have it automatically reconnect after a disconnect until you have the file. Then it will disconnect when it has completed the downloads.
Check it out, I'm sure you will agree it is a good way to download on dial up.

-Hi,
This little app looks like a winner (nice find -MacSis). Hope -OP pops back w/ some feedback. Not sure why you'd need it w/ a T1 connection /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
